HTC Touch Diamond / Pro / Fuze

xda website hurts my brain, searching for information is hard on there..
alot of the stickies are out of date (like the rom list)

I can't find 2.03 on there... I understand I can update to it (I may lose some rogers features); they arent releasing an update for NAM 3G yet so hence 1.93 being latest NAM version.

 
if you are unsure... don't update it..always read over everything before doing anything. Make sure that the rom you are looking at is available for all diamond versions, both CDMA and GSM. I've used 1.93 for a long time, never had any problems.

Yeah, I really am an If it aint broke.... kind of person. I don't think I will update until HTC releases one for NAM

I'm considering getting a Touch Pro.

Some questions if I may ask:

1. Is the thickness bothersome?

2. How's the QWERTY keyboard? It's a spring-loaded slide-out mechanism, right? I'm worried about it getting loose. I don't change phones frequently.
 
If you have a Touch Pro. or Diamond make sure to join the PPCGeeks forums so you can try out all the custom ROMs. I've installed the latest ROM by MightyMike for the Touch Pro. and it definitely makes a difference in performance compared to the stock ROM.

Doesn't that void the warranty?
 
It does, but only if you tell them you installed a custom ROM. It's very easy to re-install the original ROM if you have to bring the phone in for repair or any other reason.
 
I picked up a HTC Touch Pro about two weeks ago and am still getting used to it. Pretty nice phone but I've noticed that WinMo is kinda buggy and the device eats the battery like heck. Not a big deal I guess if you charge it often.

Anyway, has anyone has any success with a custom ROM on an Alltel phone? How risky is the procedure?

I have an Alltel Touch Pro. Couldn't keep my hands off of it and was flashing it by day number 2. It's nooo problem at all as long as you're using CDMA ROMs (Same if you're flashing Sprint, Verizon, Telus, US Cellular etc).

The Alltel Touch Pro is ungimped so you don't have to hesitate on your choices of Roms. Many people including me have had great success with Mighty ROM 4.16 or Juicy ROM 5. Mighty ROM 5 and Juicy ROM 6 are out with features the new Windows Mobile 6.5, but there's still a lot of bugs concerning audio, ringtone deletion, and severe keyboard lag being worked out. Some have workarounds, and there's a new release every few days thats really getting things ironed out. I'll probably switch to Mighty 5 within the next month. I still need my phone so I only tried Mighty 5 and got some bugs worked out with the community then switched back.

Again, I flash my phone every few days. It's no big deal, and it's no danger unless you do something stupid.

You unlock your phone, then you're free to flash to whatever CDMA ROM you want. If you need detailed instructions just PM me and I'll be glad to work you through it.

Oh, forgot to say that one of the bugs is that *some* users find MMS (picture and video messaging) don't work with certain ROMs (Many of the ROMs are built off Sprint, which is a different MMS). This can be fixed by simply changing the server settings for MMS. The dcd Alltel cab does this, but I found it messed up my GPS so I just edit the settings manually. Its just going into the MMS settings and blanking out the Gateway address and changing the server address. Change two blanks and its good.

The thing is very thick. It's not at all bothersome to me but I came from a Kyocera Strobe K612B with an extended battery, so I'm plenty used to grossly thick phones.

The keyboard is the weakpoint of this phone. Apparently it was the one thing Verizon got right on their otherwise crippled Touch Pro. The slide mechanism is solid and perfect. The Sprint has some wobble, and I can literally twist the Alltel Touch Pro's several degrees.

Also, the keyboard is the *severe* weak point of this phone. After the first drop you stand a good chance of no longer having a working hardware keyboard. The cable that connects the keyboard is a ZIF connector with *no* sort of tape or adhesive. The problem lies in the fact that this connector very quickly can become disconnected, completely disabling the phone. My roommate has returned his phone twice already for this problem. My brother is getting his new phone tomorrow after his month-old phone's keyboard stopped working back on Friday.

Consider *really* hard if you want a hardware keyboard. If you dont and you're on Verizon the Omnia is the *better* choice. If you're on Alltel your only choice is really the Touch Pro unless you want to get a Verizon Omnia and activate it on Alltel.

To be honest at this point I would have considered a Blackberry if it wasn't for the fact that I really like the freedom of Windows Mobile.

The virtual keyboard on the Touch Pro is so so. The screen is smaller so using it vertically is full qwerty mode is near impossible unless you have skinny fingers. I use compact qwerty pretty easily. I know one guy who just likes to emulate the T9 keyboard and is lighting fast with it.

Still, I like the virtual keyboards better on phones with no physical keyboard. Those buttons on the front of the Touch Pro just take away too much screen real estate for a vertical keyboard.

As isln said, you can easily download the dumped ROM and install the stock ROM once more and then relock it. It will appear as if the phone was never modified. If you have an Alltel Touch Pro however hold off on doing the radio firmware. There is no leaked radio firmware for it though many people just install Sprint's radio firmware since it only differs by one number at the very end and it seems to never be noticed. You can modify the Alltel ROM all you want though since there's a dump of the stock firmware available.

I personally run Mighty ROM 4.16 and Telus radio ROM.
 
HTC Diamond Touch owner here.

This phone has taken some getting used to by the wife and myself, but overall real happy with the phone.

PPCGeeks is the place to look for info on them. I'm with Cellular South which is CDMA and have flashed at least 10 different ROMs. I'm using Caulkin's 6.5 ROM. Windows Mobile 6.5 is definately more iPhone'ish in its layout.

These phones have a lot of stuff to play with and are great for someone like me who is a .Net developer and overall geek with tech toys.

A lot of people ask so can download stuff to put on the phone... and I say yes, but there isn't a central app store with everything at your disposal. You have to find what you want and it's not as easy as tap to download and tap to install.

Get Skyfie for sure... I watch Hulu at work with this very useful app. It lets these phones go to websites that offer full flash, but the quality is not a great as the youtube app for them.

How do you like the Touch Pro. so far? Have you found any custom ROMs for it? I haven't seen many for the GSM Touch Pro..

I only have the Diamond.

Didn't care for getting any different ROMS for it since it works fine. Sometimes it bogs down and is slow but for my use (which is minimal) it is perfectly fine!
 
i upgraded my touch diamond to touch pro, i paid $180 on ebay and got a refurb.... it works well, on stock rom, but i unlocked it and put a customized 'energy rom' on it and it really took off with the battery life. i run wmwifirouter all day when i'm at work, and it used to drain my battery down to 50% even when plugged into AC power. now with the new rom i'm staying at 95%

i love the star trek communicator wav when i slide my keyboard out.
