Sprint has just confirmed that its HTC EVO 4G smartphone users will begin receiving notifications for the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system update starting on Monday, June 6. The notifications will roll out in waves, according to the company. In a blazing burst of insight, though, Sprint will also be making the update available right away to those that just can't wait. The manual update option will become available starting on this Friday, June 3. It will be accessible from the phone's Settings, System Updates, HTC Software Update section. The update will restore the EVO's ability to support multiple Gmail accounts and will fix some battery issues, as well.

good news here.

I just flashed a 2.3 rom to my EVO. It's ugly as hell IMHO, the app drawer is especially bad looking. Is there a way for me to revert back to the old app drawer in Sense?

What exactly did you flash?

Gengersense, which looks pretty stock, I'm getting MikG right now, from the 2.3 screenshots I saw Google did terrible things to the appearance of the app drawer.

Those are both (basically) stock Sense builds from a different phone. As far as we know, HTC didn't upgrade the version of Sense for the EVO in the GB update.

I have mikfroyo 4.6 on my phone. If i do an manual update will this brick my phone? I am thinking of just waiting until mik has a gingerbread release but I did not know if I should try out the OTA what would happen.

There's Evo owners that aren't running Cyanogenmod? Mindboggling. :p

why would I want to deal with a totally different image?
nothing is wrong with the stock one.. eveyrthing works as it should and no messing with crap..

this is my lifeline if I brick my phone I'm screwed. why take the chance?

I prefer Launcher Pro over either the Sense launcher or AOSP. My wife's Evo has a Sense ROM because she is used to the Sense apps that came with her phone and I don't want to change everything for her by switching her to AOSP (which would change her dialer, contacts, alarm clock, calculator, and other apps).

You should look up MikG. It's based off of a leaked Evo Shift ROM, but it also has Sense 2.1 (with some 3.0 stuff) and seems to be running pretty well for me so far. Presumably mik will update it to run off of the new OTA base soon. You'll want to do a full wipe coming from Froyo, though.

Thanks A5. I might give that a shot. Do you think it is a major upgrade or should I just wait for mikG to be based off of a true stock base

MikG'd rom will never be stock, even based off stock it'll still be highly modified. The EVO's still on Sense 1 (for whatever reason) All that's broke in his current rom's 4G, if you don't need 4G I would just go for it. I doubt a build with the official 2.3 EVO rom will be much different than the current one.

4G works on MikG 1.0. There's also a package to update all the radios and the kernel to those that were released in the OTA today.

So far, I think the Sense updates are worth getting away from the stock-style ROMs, but you need to be ready to redo all your settings and accounts - application restores seem to work with Titanium Backup, but the settings restoration does not work.

How is the battery life with the MikG ROM and the new stock kernel and radios?

So far it seems similar to what I was getting on the Fresh 4.0.0.4 Beta, which is pretty much the same as what I was getting stock. That's based on general feeling, not any measurement though.
