Keep in mind "give away" phones are subsidized by the carrier who then tack on the costs to the price of the plan. But I'm surprised at how well HTC is doing. They're fast becoming the premiere Android OEM.

I'm gonna root for motorola and samsung. I've owned HTC phones in the past and I haven't been happy with them.

On top of the fact that they've been the premiere Windows Mobile OEM for a long time.

HTC has been making great phones for a long time, they were just never branded HTC. The T-Mobile Dash, Palm Treo 750w, and Sony Xperia X1 were all HTC phones, for example.

We (Centennial) used to sell the heck out of the p4300 and what's now the Dash. Never had any issues with them but at that time everyone wanted an iPhone.

After breaking ranks and trying my Vibrant, I'll never own a phone besides an HTC.

Their build quality certainly leaves something to be desired. I like the design of my Evo enough, but I've heard so many horror stories about issues with the hardware itself breaking. My only complaint is their phones feel a little... well, cheap next to an iPhone. Flimsy plastic battery doors, non-flush bezels around the screen, etc.

If they upped their game on the build quality front they could do even more damage than they already are.

It varies from model to model. The build quality on the HD2, for example, is fantastic. I've never seen a Legend in person, but they're supposed to be some of the best built phones around.

I have a 2nd hand G1 I got from eBay that's solid as a rock. I'm not sure which device people are pointing their fingers at when they level this argument at HTC.

Motorola is seeing profits off Android as well.

Samsung was late to the game, but their Galaxy handsets are selling very well.

LG seems to be the only company lagging at this point. Nokia and RIM don't want anything to do with Android at this time.

I've owned the Touch Diamond and the EVO. They both had quality build problems, namely the battery door.

The problem with these two devices is that the battery door is the entire back door. What this results to is a creaky phone. On top of this the battery door is paper thin.

The battery door needs to be smaller and not be the entire back of the phone.

It's a consistency issue. Too much process variance.

I have a nicely built Evo, but I've heard of many others who have screen separation issues at the bottom. Easy to spot because the touchbutton LED backlights bleed through around the bezel.

Mine has a small bulge near the volume keys, as the glass for the touchscreen has a little bit of a lip there on the inside that pushes the plastic bezel out a bit. Nothing I'd complain about, but putting it next to my wife's two iphones (2G and 4G), it's a step lower in build quality. And Apple doesn't let anything out that's not built perfectly. Again, this is a defect, but I don't really care to even complain about it.

Basically, if you get an HTC phone and aren't happy with the build quality, you can't be shy about returning it for a new one. It just seems that people are happier to bitch about it on the internet than actually return it for one that is built to their satisfaction. It's not like these companies don't offer support.

I kind of like the design of their early/mid-2010 products like the N1, Desire, Wildfire etc. At least they look original, instead of being just a boxy lump of black plastic or aluminum. Kind of retro, but still modern. Unfortunately, they've switched to non-descript, boxy designs now.
