I don't think it's fail as far as the chipset goes. My HTC One casually rips apart anything I throw at it. We are living in the world now, where only geeks argue and measure these things now. Normal users just notice load times, lag, etc. And the HTC One has been proven to be a responsive device.

Now as far at it being a failure. Yes it will fail. There is no inspiration behind this device. It seems 2010-2011 Motorola-ish.

They should be concentrating on flagship updates while they prep refreshed versions of their "One" device. Instead of having "One" device, we have one + two compromised devices that few are interested in. Just more resources that should have gone into keeping their promise.

i think they should have held off, and launched a refreshed one, one mini, and one max together next year.

The thing is, with S800 it would have a longer battery life. Also, no idea about you, but my HTC does pause sometimes during web browsing (could be a Chrome thing though). You can't really have enough speed, as long as you're not sacrificing battery life (and S800 is that great SoC - faster and sips less battery juice).

Also, OIS is a major thing on the regular One. Together with the bigger pixels, it does make really nice pictures. Something's wrong with my One's camera though and it's making violet-colored pictures (they look really bad) ... A shittier camera doesn't really bode well here.

Finally... a remove back for just the microSD card slot... really?

For me this phone is so much full of fail, it's not funny. The only awesome thing is BoomSound speakers - they're really awesome on the One and I'm sure they'll be as awesome on this one. But everything else is just a huge disappointment. There's nothing else that screams "buy me!".

I think I would go with Sony if I were looking for something in this size.

Posted this mostly on the Note 3 thread - in hindsight I don't mean to come across as bashing, but HTC really didn't seem like they interviewed phablet users or likely phablet users. Instead they targeted some specs and executed.

Lack of S800 is a bit disappointing not b/c of the performance, but the SOC seems to include some actually impactfull battery saving improvements.

-------------

The HTC One Maxx is exactly what I thought it shouldn't be as a phablet - quite large and heavy. Even though it has a .2" larger screen, the on screen buttons eat up a bunch of that. So you get a usable screen that's a bit larger in a body that's much larger.

Also, I thought the Note 2 weight of 183 g was borderline for everyday phablet use and the Note 3 weight was a welcome change. Going the other way by 30% over the Note 2 is the wrong way. Put another way, the One Maxx is almost heavier than the Note 3 by the same amount the Note 3 is heavier than the iPhone 5.

Note 3
151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3 mm
168 g (5.93 oz)

One Maxx
164.5 x 82.5 x 10.3 mm
217 g (7.65 oz)

Android Chrome sucks no matter what you throw at it. I love the features, but bitch and moan everytime it stutters or loads pages lazily. Dolphin, every other browser just works. S800 won't help you much here.

What if HTC couldn't pay the asking price for the S800? Or they weren't even let to bid on it? Could explain why there are no S800 smartphones from HTC... they had to use the S600 as it was the only SoC available for them. Hmm...

Something has always been nagging me in the back of my mind that this would literally be nothing more than a stretched HTC One. Including the specs. That hunch was right.

No OIS is completely baffling to me, the camera was one of the big selling points of the original One, which i love.

They put the fingerprint scanner next to the camera lens. Someone at HTC should be fired for this.

I stopped reading at Snapdragon 600. Epic fail... And I have a HTC One, in case people are wondering. No Snapdragon 800 disqualifies this phone completely. Seriously HTC, WHAT THE HELL?

Also, no OIS.... this thing won't sell, at all.

How many people know what s600 or s800 are? Or OIS? The majority of people I know don't buy a phone for specs. All they know is "Samsung = good" If it doesn't sell it will be because HTC phones in general don't sell well. If this was a Samsung with the exact same specs it would move like hot cakes.

Yeah, but us techies recommend phones to non-techies, i personally had 2 people buy the One on my recommendation. I personally would recommend AGAINST the One Max.

Same here - HTC sold 3 more Ones thanks to my recommendations (plus the one I bought, so that's 4 total).

Non-techies ask tech-aware friends which phone to buy. I would never suggest getting the One Max, ever.

What a joke HTC, where is hspa 42 and tmobile lte band? Why CDMA? Seem like Samsung got it right with the Note 3 by using the S800.

Doesn't look like there's any announced plans to put these on either T-Mobile or AT&T period. Notice the lack of LTE bands for either.

217 grams/7.65 ounces. You have got to be kidding me. This thing is a tank. The Note III is 168 grams/5.93 ounces.

Nice to see them properly place the power button on the side and provide an SD card slot. It's a shame the One didn't offer both these features.

Htc should a least clock the s600 to around 2.0 or 2.2 ghz unless all they get from qualcomm is the lower binned chips
