HTC: No longer locking bootloaders

HTC caved in really quickly. Motorola took everyone around a circle jerk for over a year now. Unlike Motorola, HTC sells plenty of unlocked phones. Motorola essentially sucks on Verizon's left tit to survive in the US.

HTC caved in really quickly. Motorola took everyone around a circle jerk for over a year now.

They are a great example of a Taiwanese manufacturer. They rely on a relatively small profit from a large volume of hardware sales of cutting edge hardware. They must be lean & mean, meaning they must have low overhead and be fast and responsive to market trends. They can move from concept, to design, QA, and manufacturing faster than it takes a large American company like Motorola to polish a Powerpoint.

Good news, but the fact still remains their build quality ranks among the worst I've seen on a cell phone. That should be a priority to them too. I got a new EVO last week and it just feels cheap, the battery cover isn't quite flush and the power/side buttons are crummy. Motorola has better build quality. And in the end I'll take a better built locked phone over a plasticy toy I can root and put roms on easily.

i must disagree, my nexus one is probably on par with the iphone 4 for most solidly built handset out there.

Aside from the flimsy power button, my Thunderbolt feels just as solid as my Moto Droid. Not to disparage Moto's build quality, they're near the top in that regard.

my desire s is solid as hell, solid one piece aluminium case and the glass feels more firm than the old desire. the volume and power buttons are not flimsy or loose, they just keep getting better and better.

Good publicity stunt. . One thing I like about Facebook, Twitter, and other social sites is that it gives the power to the consumers to organize and let their voices be heard by large corporations. It worked with Samsung and now it worked here with HTC. Good job by both parties.

Yup. In prep for the data tiers VZW is going to do, I'm looking at phones to renew with. This is helping push it towards the TB over Charge (I know that this policy wasn't in place for the TB).

Samsung does not lock the boot loaders on their phones. Charge included.
They never have and they never will.

i have coworkers with both the charge and the TB and honestly, the charge is a much better choice unless you just can't handle the plasticky build. The battery life is pretty much double that of the TB, plus you get the SAMOLED screen

Verizon might be up to some some shenanigans or it's just one clueless employee on Twitter.

No, a device with an unlocked bootloader cannot be activated on the Verizon Wireless network. *RB

I'm leaning towards clueless as the OG Droid, OG Incredible and Fascinate all had unlocked bootloaders.

I am legitimately shocked that a huge corporation actually listened to what has to be a small minority of people who are interested in installing custom ROMs on their phones and didn't counter with the "we need to secure our products" argument.

Don't underestimate what that small community of hackers/developers has given HTC over the years.
