I have a perfectly fine windows 7 phone Samsung Focus that does everything that I need except for the fact that it cant take pictures after being dropped a few too may times. One of the main uses I have for the phone is taking pictures and uploading them for business purposes....advertisements and such. Of course I would like to have the latest and greatest but in all reality i dont need one. And buying off contract (im not in the US) sometimes the prices are just a little ridiculous. So the htc 8x is very cheap about the same price as the Nokia 520 but I was hoping to switch to android as unfortunately many companies dont support windows yet. On the same note ive bean able to ise windows without any major constraints. I am seriously looking at the Nexus 5 but who knows when that will be released and then when the prices wont be inflated due to short stock. Any opinions welcome

I picked up a Nokia 521 because it was much cheaper than the HTC 8X. But if those two phones are similarly priced I'd definitely get the HTC 8X. I like that it has a larger and higher resolution screen. The Lumia 521 feels so cramped (4.7 inch Nexus 4 is my main phone).

I think the Nexus 5 is arriving in October. Though there is the Google launch to look forward too after that, and since you are not in the US it could be a while longer and as you mentioned, more expensive.

The 8X was quite a nice phone when released, and honestly still is. The camera should be much better than the 521 as well. But support going forward is a concern, HTC botched the GDR2 update and a lot of carriers are waiting until GDR3 at this point.

Makes me wonder how long HTC will stay with WP. Perhaps a used Lumia in one of the higher series (820 for example, 92x series) would be possible?

If you can get a HTC 8X in good condition used for the same price as a Lumia 520, I'd go for it. It's a significantly better device, hardware-wise, than the Lumia 520 and is still a pretty small device.

But looking on swappa, they're about $100 or so more than a L520. That's about double the price. I don't know if that would be worth it.

Its about 50usd more than the 520 but the 520 is useless to me. There is no flash for the camera and i would guess that at least over half of any pics that I take are indoors. It sounds like the htc is the way to go. However i saw a friends galaxy s4 and thats a beautiful phone...a bit on the pricey side for me though.

I was on the fence between the iPhone 5 and the 8x when I was getting a new phone at the beginning of the year. I went with the iPhone 5 only because I was able to get a great deal on an unlimited plan through Sprint. Otherwise it would have been the 8x, in blue. Great looking phone, fantastic screen, feels good in the hand, and of course WinPho8, which is nice.

I was actually pretty impressed with the 520's low-light performance.

But yes, sometimes you do need a real flash.

For $50 I'd definitely go for it. You get a 720p screen, 500mhz per core faster processor, 1GB of RAM, NFC and a front facing camera.

I've heard great things about the 8X hardware and less great things about HTC supporting WP8. The 520 pretty much has the reverse issue. All things considered I'd go with the 8X.

Having had an 8x for about 10 months now I have to say that I've run into numerous hardware problems. The SIM tray was poorly designed which leads to (reasonably) frequent sim card errors that force you to reboot the phone. Additionally, since upgrading to the latest version of WP8 I've experienced problems sending text messages and random reboots during phone calls.

It's a great looking phone and it runs well, but at least in my experience the quality leaves something to be desired.

I don't think anyone has accused the Lumia 520 of being "less than great" hardware. Based on its price, it is nothing short of excellent.

HTC's Windows Phone 8 support hasn't been great, though. Their release of the GDR2 update is apparently buggy and causes some issues with crashing and occasionally bricking phones. It isn't an issue with GDR2 in general, as other OEMs aren't having that issue. Rather than fixing the update, they apparently opted to simply stop pushing it and skip GDR2.

The hardware looks nice, but I've heard of the colored variations fading in some really unpleasant ways.

The Nokia 820 is a great handset. Pretty cheap, AMOLED screen (better battery, and looks good too), and expandable SD card memory. I'm using it right now...great thing.
