I just got the message boards on my website up and running (thank GOD!) and they work wonderfully! Obviously, this isn't the problem. I run a subscription website (which hasn't launched officially yet) and I want my message boards to be used only by the members of my site. Since the message boards offer no way to really do this without a LOT of work, I thought I'd use the old .htaccess/.htpasswd trick. The problem is, I've never actually done .htaccess/.htpasswd before. when I uploaded my two new files, everything seemed fine. Obviously I remembered to encrypt the password and everything. Everyone talks about using telnet to do this stuff, but the version of telnet that I have with Win XP isn't anything like what everyone else describes. Mine is DOS based, the version they use always has buttons and runs in Windows and such, so i typed the files manually, making sure everything was entered correctly. Now, when I click the link for the message boards, the little pop-up comes up asking for my username/password. I enter exactly what I have in the .htpasswd file, but it doesn't let me in. Of course, I enter the password unencrypted. I've reviewed the copies of the files that I have on my hard drive, and it all seems right, but it still doesn't work. Also, I'm unable to move/edit the files on my ftp server because neither CuteFTP nor the DOS version of ftp (Run -> ftp) will show me that those files exist. How do I find those files? Again, I can't seem to figure out telnet. Thanks in advance, sorry there's so much to read!
