HT -> why does task manager always show 50% usage...

i understand how the whole HT idea works and have used true smp systems before, but unless the applications i am using is smp aware, the task manager only shows the cpu usage to be about 50%. i can understand for multitasking this is beneficial, but if i am not multitasking and just encoding video with squeeze, which isn't smp aware, am i wasting 1/2 of the cpu cycles?

normally it would show 100% cpu usage. It's a little program that works a bit like a pacemaker.

You're not wasting 1/2 the cycles. Since Windows doesn't know it's only one cpu, it reports it as an SMP system which WOULD only be using half of its available cycles.
