HT-S9400THX Sound Dropping Issue

Recently my system seems to drop all sound no matter the input or even a test sound from the receiver. I have the latest firmware on the unit as well. I have tried powering off and unplugging for an extended period of time and this sometimes works. I also have done a factory reset which did not work. There has been no power surges to the system as far as I know. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. There is another sound issue that might be related but I just chalked it up to an HDMI handshake issue. Sometimes when I turn on my computer connected through the receiver on before the receiver the sound does not play but if I power it off than back on it will. Not as big a deal as completely no sound.

I still have a warranty on this for another 2 years. So I am not really worried about impending repair costs but is there something that anyone of you have seen to fix this issue or even have the same issue?

Thank you for any help.

Did you upgrade the firmware yourself? If so, did it run properly before the upgrade?

Sometime a shorted speaker wire or speaker can cause a receiver to shut down. Have you disconnected some of the speakers to check for this possibility?

Onkyo receivers tend to run hot. Make sure the vents are not obstructed.

If none of the above solve the problem, its time for warranty repair.

Good luck.

I did upgrade the firmware myself. The last firmware to come out was last year. I recently re did it to see if that changed anything it did not. Do you mean shutdown as in completely off or just no sound shutdown?

I will try the speakers suggestion. If there was a short though I would think it would always be there if I never touched any of the speaker connections on the unit itself or the speakers. Plenty of room on all sides for ventilation.

This picture that I took from the manual where the 1st icon is for the speaker/channel currently in use that is completely blank when this no sound issue happens if that helps any.

If there was a short in one of your speaker or speaker wire, it would make the amp overheat and shut down completely.

Can you run the Audyssey set up when the issue is present?
Can you select sound modes?
Did you go through the troubleshooting guide starting on page 67?

I double checked the speaker wire connections non are shorting. I can not run the Audyssey setup if I try it will just say "waiting". I can select sound modes but to no avail. I had done most of the steps out of memory and reread it this morning none of those options helped.

Unless somebody else has other suggestions I think it's time for warranty repair.

Keep us posted.
