HSF with NO thermal grease?

Ok, my 1800+ tbred OEM came from newegg today. I already have a good fan. 5500RPM 60mm, and a side intake fan and rear exaust, both 80mm. The problem is I'm out of thermal grease, i thought I had some, but I don't. I'll pick some up this weekend, but until then I'll be running without any (copper heatsink). Is this ok to do? I'm idling about 104 F in the BIOS on a K7S5A. Will this be a problem? I had a Palomino 1700 so his is way cooler then it was, even so, how hot is *too* hott for the tbred?

thats a pretty good temperature
i would imagine you already have the stepping info burned into the bottom of the heatsink which kinda looks cool when you take it off

other than that its not recommended that you operate it without thermal grease, but leave it in bios for a while and if it stays around that temperature then its fine

btw what heatsink?

my friend left his athlon xp with a mcx462+delta68cfm fan without thermal grease for a few days andit was alright

its a hsf I picked up at CompUSA (generic brand) but it seems to work VERY well, it cost $20. Its a Copper Heatsink with 5500RPM 60MM Fan. Actually it looks like the heatsink has a tiny bit of thermal grease stuck on it from before, but thats it. Think it'll run for 5 days? (not all day, just about 4-5 hours a day at 10% load or less). My friend has a 2200+ system with Radeon 9700 512 PC2700 all the stuff that he got custom built from a local computer shop, and they use the same fan/heatsink on his (it actually says "jet art" on it).

don't almost ALL HSF come with a square of thermal compound at the bottom....I just used this with my XP1800+ and temps are fine.....it certainly has been running for a lot longer than 5 days.

yea my HSF came with it, but I bought it 4 months ago and I used it on my 1700+ and is no longer there.. Still in windows Im idling 98F...20 Cooler then the 1700!

dont know about anyone else, but running with no grease is a bad idea. you will have tiny air pockets where the heatsink does not touch, allowing that part to get hotter. this diff in temp across the die COULD cause probs, but cant say for sure. remember that if the temp is being measured by a thermistor the temp reading is not gonna be all that accurate. if i were u, just wait, cause u might regret it later.
