HSF too noisy...help!

My friend used the stock AMD HSF for his 2800+ for a long time with his cpu temp. at 60C all the time. Later his cpu temp jumped up to 80C and he couldn't stand it. So he bought a Vantec VT-VA4-C7040 to try to cool things down a little bit. Now his cpu temp goes down to 50C. However, he complains that the Vantec HSF is too noisy (it rotates at 5600rpm compare to ~3000rpm of the stock HSF, sure...)

I guess it helps by reducing the fan speed down to ~4500rpm. (My friend said 60C is ok, as long as it's not so noisy) I don't think that Vantec HSF comes with a fan speed adjustment control. So is there a way to set the fan speed in that case? Can it be done in the BIOS (his mobo is a cheap Gigabyte GA-7VT600-PL)? Or is there an extra controller he can buy to adjust that Vantec fan's speed?

Zalman Fanmate if it doesn't draw too much power.
What case is it? (80C is um...insane, regardless of mobo inaccuracies)

Is the Zalman Fanmate the same little connector used in the Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu HSF? Do they sell it separately?

The pc case my friend used is a cheap generic case. It doesn't even have holes in front of the case for the airflow of a front mounted case fan.

The fanmate uses a normal 3-pin connector on both ends.

fanmate is 5bux. better fan controllers not much more considernig they can controlthe rest of his fans. next time, he should buy the best cooler he can afford if he wants silence. u need a nice efficient chunk of copper to work at low rpm.... as for the stock at 80c, he's doing something wrong if thats the case. or letting dust just build way up. amd stock coolers work just fine. his case must be choked or something for fresh air.

There's no reason for any amd cpu to run at 60c under load even if you want a quiet setup. Get a high quality heatsink that takes 80 or 90mm fans and run a medium speed fan at 7v or use a quiet fan like a panflo L1A or vantec stealth. With some arctic silver and correct installation, idle temps should be 35ish tops with load temps in the mid to high 40's. That goes for any stock amd cpu imo.

There are many good heatsinks but a lot of crappy ones too.
Try swiftech, thermalright, some of the thermaltakes, zalman, alpha... I'll think of some more later

I've checked that Zalman Fanmate allows a voltage of no more than 6V. However, that Vantec VT-VA4-C7040 fan runs at 12V. I guess I can't use fanmate but to suggest him to get another HSF. Poor him...

Get him this. It's quiet and has good airflow. But if his system runs that hot he might need better airflow.

best for low rpm are the thermalright slk series, the base is very narrow, so most fins allow flow through

Wrong letter.
6w. Most quiet fans don't draw anywhere near 6w.
I'd still be concerned that a new shiny HSF won't do any good, though.
What are the case temps? If they suck equally bad, you might want to spend that HSF money on a decent case (ever or ugly, FI), rather than HSF.

hah, if ur fan uses more then a fanmate can handle, it has no business in a comp that isn't supposed to sound like a wind tunnel

Keep in mind that Vantec uses a TMD fan that may not behave well with fewer volts.

If he's deadset on keeping the case, push him towards a Thermalright (not Thermaltake) heatsink that uses an 80mm fan. But I agree with Cerb in that a new case might be a better way to spend the money. With the right selection he might even be able to go back to the stock HSF and get acceptable temps.

Yes, case, case...at least see what the temps are.
The ones I linked are just about the cost (a touch more) of a new better HSF, and by all means are not the greatest--but they also are pretty good for air flow.

With that noisy Vantec HSF, his cpu temp is now 50C. I think his case temp is ok. He just told me he has another Volcano9 that has a fan speed control. He asked me to switch it for him and see what happen. I hope that will help.

Thanks guys. (I guess I'll grab a fanmate for myself instead :p )
