Somebody please help me! The more I read and research and click on links, the more confused I get. I know you've answered this again and again but please just one more time.
My twin 17 yr old boys want to build their own computer so we have been researching and this is what we decided on:

Thunderbird 850 retail
Abit kt7 RAID
Antec 1030b

Now the retail comes with HSF but some say it won't work with the Abit so we need another type --there are so many but we narrow it down to 3 or 4 , then we read it's too noisy, won't fit Abit either, too hard to install, not available....
Please suggest the best HSF for the above and where to get it in stock. Also what else for cooling we might need besides Arctic Silver.
Thanks for your help and sorry for making you all repeat yourselves again.

I hadn't heard anything about retail AMD HSFs not fitting the KT7 RAID... but I could have missed that.
I have heard some good things about Tai Sol's HSFs. If cost is a factor, they are definitely cheap and I have heard that they cool quite well. They are AMD-approved.

You can get the alpha pal6035, they have in stock for $35 at 3dfxcool.com, they call it the Alpha7HO-FAN, its expemsive because there is a shortage, but they do have it and it works the best, unless you get an all copper hedgehog for $50+. But about the artic silver I'd save money and not buy it, they give you a syringe of goop at 3dfxcool and it works fine, that's all you need to cool the t-bird, also I would buy an oem 900 on pricewatch.com,not a retail 850. since you are going to buy a fan separately. The price difference between oem 850 to 900 is $20. If you plan on not overclocking at all just stick with the retail then, the fan will fit the abit.

the TaiSol did the trick for me. It dropped my temps about 10c. and got my Duron from 950 to 1100 mhz.

the hs/fan combo on the retail chip is the taisol cek733. it'll fit the abit just fine. there's a new model called the cgk742 (i know the 742's right - not sure about the cgk) that isn't even out yet, and it's huge! the cek733 that comes on the retail is smaller than most other high-performance fans you'll find (ie: fop38, pal6035), so it's illogical that the cek733 wouldn't fit on that board when thousand are running bigger combos on the same board. that retail fan should do your cooling fine at that speed. if you run it and the temps start creeping above 55 celsius or so, then think about getting a stronger hs/fan, but as it is, let 'er rip.

It's available for $33, and it beat the FOp 38 in testing, yet it's very quiet unlike the Fop 38.
