HSF replacement

I'm going to be replacing my current stock HSF combo on my Barton 2800+ with this Arctic Cooling My question is this. How do I go about cleaning up the left over gunk the thermal pad leaves behind, and how do I apply the cooling silicone properly? Thanks

What can I expect to see from the thermal pad that was on the core? I don't want to apply any cooling silicone to a dirty CPU.
