I am planning on buying a new HSF. And i need help in picking one out. Lately my processor has been getting into the 70s temp range and i'm very concerned about it. This is my first time buying one and i don't wanna make a mistake. So i'm hoping that the Volcano 11 and some Artic Silver III will bring down my CPU temps. My specs are at the bottom and the link provided below will show you the kind of HSF i'm getting. Please tell me if i'm getting the right one. Also feel free to comment on the Volcano 11, if you feel there is a better HSF, tell me about it. I appreciate all the help anyone can give, thanks! :)

Volcano 11

OS: XP Pro
CPU: Socket A/462 AMD Athlon XP 2 GHZ (1667 MHZ)

RAM: 256MB DDR PC2700

Power Supply: 300W
Video Card: GeForce 3
Sound Card: Hercules MUSE 5.1 (yes i know it sucks :D)

I refuse to buy another thermaltake heatsink as long as I live, I almost killed mine processor and clamping lever when trying to get it on the zif socket. I would look at a ThermalRight or Vantec branded heatsink.

i will look into those sites, thanks. Installation can be a pain, i know what you mean. i experienced that with the HSF im using now. My ram chips are located right next to the socket and so i had such a hard time getting the clip around the peg. it was very fustrating. I do want my next installation to be a lot easier.

Also, i have another question if anyone can answer it. I need to remove the old paste i am using right now from the core. Was wondering on how this is possible. i heard i can use alcohol. I have 'Ethyl Rubbing Alcohol'... will this do? It says its: "Rubefacient/Topical Antimicrobial, Contains: 70% Ethyl Alcohol by volume" Thanks again for the help.

The SK-7 is a popular choice here. It can be had for $19.99 at svc.com. You will need to buy a fan to go with it.

thats a monster! its huge! :D Are you sure the socket pegs will be able to hold that? And mounting fans on it will just make it even more heavier.

I use the SK7 and it mounts very firmly. I topped it with a Panaflo L1A and my temps are 45-50 under load. I believe that the SK7 is one of the best sinks out there for the money. The SLK800 is also supposed to be very good, but it is over twice the cost for very nearly the same performance. Do you overclock?

I'd get almost any heatsink other than a thermaltake one. For the money, the SK7 is probably the best. As Bonesdad said.

You use regular isopropl alchohol (rubbing alchohol). Go here for detailed instruction.

I'd go with an SK7, many many people use the thermalright heatsinks and I've never heard of a problem due to the size. They attach to all 3 lugs on each side, and there is even a model of the slk900 that screws down. Pair it with a low to med speed fan.

A girl at my local computer shop nudged me to go with the Vantec Aeroflow. I was a bit skeptical at first because it just didn't *look* like a good cooler, nor had I read any reviews on it. Turns out that it's worked very well, keeping my my athlon xp 2100+ @ 2200, 1.7v, at 49-50C average in a non-airconditioned room.

I'm sure the Volcano will work, I have never used one. The other volcanos are way too loud for my tastes. I chose the SK-7 and the Panaflo L1a cuz its a nice quiet setup. And as far as removing old goop, I use Goof Off to get rid it. I'm sure alchohol will work fine too. Good luck!

My Volcano 7+ is quiet to me on low and can easily keep my temps at 47C at max on full load.

Im running a Palomino 1800+ @ stock speed @ 1.65V (1.65V to 1.68V (just watched it for 5 mins). I do have 2 noisy case fans in but they run at about 3600 rpm each.
