HSF Question...

I bought an Alpha PAL8045 cooler over 2 years ago, and I am curious how it stacks up to the more modern heat sinks.

I want something quiet, but cool. I have been running a fairly loud (40db) 55cfm 80mm fan on it, and I am considering moving down to a 25db Spire 80mm 38cfm fan.

It will be running on a XP2400 that I would like to OC to at least 2.2 if possible.

The case will have a 55cfm 120 in the front and a 56 cfm 120 and a 2 fan PSU in the rear if that helps.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It won't do as well as most newer heatsinks, but should cool anything you throw at it just fine. You won't be as cool as others, but it shouldn't overheat or anything, even overclocked a good bit. I'd recommend a Panaflo M or L, though. They don't push as much as as many others, but it is much more direct, pretty quiet, etc..
Overclocking the Mobile, you may have to raise the vCore a bit, which is what gets you going super hot. If you can get to 2.2 on stock voltage, you should be in great shape, though.
Actual power consumption, for AMDs anyway, hasn't changed much (and until the latest Bartons, and A64s at full load, has actually gone down), just the average temps people feel safe with, now.
With a TBird, you could be happy w/ 50C (got a stable, long-running one here that idles around that)...now that's when you generally get to worrying 🙂

Cool, I will look into the Panaflo, but the specs just don't seem to compare to the Spire fan and the Spire is only 4 bucks at coolerguys.

I would like to invest in a new HSF entirely, but I don't have the cash right now.

I'd be suspicious of the Spire's rating. It'll be either louder than claimed or flow less than claimed. 25/38 is pretty optimistic.

I can't find anyone who has actually used one, so I have no clue. Maybe I'll just give it a shot and get a low speed Panaflo at the same time just in case.

I've used Alpha heatsinks on a multitude of aggressively overclocked systems with very satisfactory results, to include this P4-2.6C running very stable at FSB 266 on an IS-7. I will agree that some of the newer devices are likely better.

Well, at least I know I have a completely sufficient cooler for my proc, with a bit of headroom for OCing.

I have a 27CFM Silencer on it right now, the PC is virtually silent. No intake fan at all, and it maxes out at 53 C. Idles around 43.

Not a lot of headroom, but I should be able to get to 2100 without any problem.
