HSF for Barton XP 2800+? difficult decision!

Going to build a computer for a friend. O'clocking is not a issue but stability is very high on the want list.

Still in the planning stage but specs will look something like this:

Athlon Barton Xp 2800+
MSI K7N2G ILSR motherboard
Antec True 480 PS
MSI G4Ti4800SE-VTD8X Video card
WD 160GB HDD from the Outpost.com deal
(another HDD will be added later)
2 sticks of 512GB Crucial PC2700 DDR Ram
Case not decided but must be 'cool'/'awesome'/whatever!
Plus the usual: DVD-RW / DVD-ROM / FDD / Fans (panaflo) / round cables etc.
Ball park cost: $1500 or thereabouts.

A nice high end machine which he wants mainly for video editing etc. (and I guess, bragging rights!)

I can't figure out which HSF to get for the CPU.
SVC GC69?
Thermalright SLK-800?
Or these with larger fans:
Zalman CNPS6000-Cu?
Artic Cooling Super Silent Pro TC ?
Unfortunately the motherboard does not appear to have mounting holes for Swiftech type HSFs so those are out.

I've got at least a week before we decide the final configuration and order the rest of the stuff. Any suggestions on the CPU Cooler would be appreciated.

Thanks.

SLK-800 or the slightly-revised 800A, with a Panaflo L1A 80mm fan and Arctic Silver 3, would be nice. It has a 3-prong clip that you should be able to engage with your bare hands, no need for mounting holes, and is one of the top performers regardless of mounting method.

You might also consider the EPoX 8RDA+ instead of the MSI, since you don't need the MSI's onboard video, or there is also the Asus A7N8X-Deluxe. If he doesn't mind a door over the drives, then an Antec PlusView 1000 would be a slick case that has a window on it, or there are clones that use the same chassis and come with windows too. They can cool three hard drives directly in the main HDD holder, which has an 80mm fan holder in it.

SVC.com has a good buy on the super-quiet NMB dual-ball-bearing 80mm fans: 5 for $11. They are great for ventilating the Antec-type cases at a low noise level, lower than Panaflo L1A's. I would still use the L1A on the heatsink for its stronger oomph. If you're looking around for L1A's, beware of Newegg, who is selling 24-volt ones 😛

I'm not a video-editing guy but isn't it generally beneficial to have more than one hard drive for that purpose? Might be something to think about.

mechBgon thanks for the advice. I have AS3 and a couple of Panaflo's lying around so SLK-800 moves up the list.

Shall look into the Epox & Asus MoBo's in more detail when I get home - posting at work and its way past time to go!!!. He chose MSI coz it has a lot of bells & whistles - Raid, onboard LAN & Audio as well as being able to use the onboard Video as temp backup (his choice not mine) built in Firewire etc. My best experiences have been with MSI boards hence my general recommendation for that brand - though would also consider Epox or Asus.

You're right about needing more HDDs. We do plan to add another 160 GB very soon, maybe in a RAID configuration. He also wants to get a couple of USB HDD's as well as a 750 MB Zip drive. This way he has backups as well as keeping stuff for various clients separate (does video work part time). Essentially most of his data will be on the USB HDD / Zip Disks with the main HDD used as a work space rather than long term storage.

Will check out the cases later - this dial-up access at work sux after having cable at home. :disgust:

SLK800 + the L1A would be my first choice. If he is doing heavy video editing, he should look into a Raid 0 array (2 80gb 8mb cache drives) for a lot more speed. and if stability is a big concern as in redundancy also look at a raid 0+1 array (4 drives).

I can also vouch for the SLK800; I own 3 of them, besides owning an MCX462+, original MC462 and an 8045. The performance of the SLK800 is at least as good as any of the others. Another option if you decide to go with a mobo that has the 4 holes around the socket like the 8RDA+ is the new SLK900. It uses the 4 holes mounting method, but won't fit on the Asus A7N8X board without modifying the heatsink for clearance for some capacitors. It will be able to mount a 92mm fan on it, but it is expensive and kind of hard to find at the moment. I've been impressed with the quality of the SLK800; it's right up close to the Swiftech's for finish quality from the factory.

The EPoX 8RDA+ does not have RAID so I guess that is out. The Asus A7N8X Deluxe is slightly more expensive than the MSI board so its a toss up - I'll ask him which one he wants.

The NMB fans at 5/$11 look good. Will order them with the cables etc to save on shipping.

Can't find any Panaflo fans around except here for $6.00 each + $4.00 shipping. Should have stocked up when bgmicro had them in stock. I do have one which I can use. What about using the 'H' fan which is 39 CFM at 32dB and using a speed regulator to slow it down - like one of these?

The SLK800 is out of stock everywhere. Will the SLK700 work instead? The SLK900 might be an option if he selects the Asus but, as pointed out by muddocktor, there is issue with bending the capacitors on the motherboard. Also see here.

Looks like I'll have to keep looking for the cooler and the fan.

Re 80GB HDd - we have already purchased the 160GB so will go with another 160GB disk. Can we add 2 80GB disks in a raid 0+1 array?

Thanks

Hardcorecooling.com has slk 800 (pretty sure its not the A)
Little on the pricy side, 51 shipped, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.
Im building a similar setup (Barton 2800+, Epox 8rda+, 1 gig geil UDL ram) and i'm gonna be using the slk 800 + thermaltake smartfan 2. I also gonna have 3 other TT SF 2's as case fans plus a slot fan. It's gonna be one loud friggin rig 😛
Sux too cuz TT Sf's draw too much power for standard baybus (i dun want a rheobus) so i gotta custom build it

paco83 it's backordered with Hardcorecooling.com.

These guys sidewindercomputers.com should have it in stock tomorrow & it's 44.50 shipped to me (Zone 4). I've got time so can wait a bit.

Check out the NMB fans at SVC. Looks like a good deal. Also see this Enermax fan with speed dial at Sidewinder. It's 39.8 CFM at 32.6 dB and cheaper than the TT SF2. I've used Enermax fans before & not had a problem.

Ah i got lucky, just called hardcorecooling, i got one of the last ones before they went OOS 😀
I like the TT SF 2's, lot more cfm, and i think i can live with the noise as long as i turn off (or at least turn down) the fans at night, plus they have the speed and temp control which i also like. Paid 10 bucks a pop for the normal ones, and also got 2 of the modded ones to light up the front bezel.

I also suggest going with the slk-800. I have it on my 8rda+ with a TT smartfan II and it is VERY nice. You can adjust the speed of the fan easily to find the happy medium. I would still reco the 8rda+ with an add in raid card if your friend wants raid. Awesome board.

GroundedSailor, I have 4 of the Panaflo 80mm H1A fans coming from mpja.com and if they come in before I go to work I'll let you know how loud they are. They are rated at 39 cfm with 32 dB sound and .25 amp current draw and they are selling them for $2.95 each. I just ordered from them over the phone yesterday and they shipped my order yesterday evening.😀 I had found that site from somewhere on the net and had bookmarked it, but had never ordered from them until yesterday. I have a nb fan going out on my KG7 rig and needed to get a new one and decided to try these people out; so far a very good experience. They also have a whole bunch of other neat stuff on their site.

3 questions bout that setup.
1 do you use the mobo header to power the fan? the 7+W that the fan takes seems a lil high
2 Is the slk800's weight a problem when transporting it? Im a college student plus i go to lan parties every now and again so it does get moved a bit.
3 You try the temp control with that?

I never use mobo header for ANY of my fans
I do nt believe the weight should be a problem (unless you are a sissy boy j/k)'
The clip has the 3 prong attatchment on both sides so it is on there pretty darn good.
I havent tried the temp control as I want to adjust it by ear.

[b[muddocktor[/b] I was thinking of the same fan when I posted earlier (see the 'H' fan below). 32db doesn't sound too loud - but with all other parts pretty silent I think the noise will stand out. Will be interesting to know what you find once you have the fans. Let us know.

paco83 that is one noisy setup you're building. Where did you get them for $10 & what do you mean by custom building it?

mboy I agree the Epox looks like a great board & I showed Dave (my friend) both the Asus & Epox. He wants to stick with the MSI. He also wants the modded TT SF2 fan! :Q

Called SVC today and the sales guy said that Panaflo fans have been discontinued so they won't be getting more and SLK800 should be in stock within a week. No they're not taking pre-orders. RIP Panaflo 🙁

Non-mod = Directron.com, 10 + 6 shipping, shipping kinda kills the deal unless u get other stuff.
modded = hardcorecooling.com 15+ 6 shipping, again shipping kills the deal unless u buy like 2

As for the custom building, im cutsom building a baybus to switch the fans between full/low/off. Gonna buy a couple switches from radioshack drill holes in a 3.5'' drive bay, and wire it to control the fans so i can controll how loud it is.

Forget the Panaflo's unless you already own them, they are old school technology... u want to get an 80mm adjustable fan, like ones made by Enermax or Vantec. Unless you have a rheobus that is!

Or you are like me and are cost-conscious. I just ordered the Panaflo 80mm H1A's for $2.95 per fan, sidewindercomputers has the Enermax for $9.00. The Enermax is a nice fan; I have a couple, but I can get 3 Panaflo H1A fans for the price of that Enermax.

Oh well! - believe it or not:
Here's the case he has decided upon.

I'm glad it's his money not mine :Q

paco83 thanks for the info.

muddocktor I would agree with you about the Panaflo's for 2.95 but waiting for your feedback on the noise. We were trying to make a reasonably quiet pc which is why I was looking for the L1A's

I should be getting the fans in on Monday afternoon; I'll let you know about the noise then. Also, I have a couple of Panaflo L1A's and I've never tried them on a heatsink because they flow too little air and too low a static air pressure IMO to be an effective fan for a heatsink. They do work well as a silent case fan though.

Did you get your fans yet? What's your opinion?

that chip is begging you for an slk-900u with a 92mm tornado on it, god the OCing Possibilities ive got a 2000+xp tb with this fan and heatsink on it and im running 1.825 vcore @ 11.5X167/34 for a speed of 1921 fsb of 334 and im getting temps of 30c under prime95. This is indeed the best you can get in air cooling, think of the wonderfull things your barton could do under this setup🙂
