HSF for 3.6Ghz LGA775 Prescott - Tower112 mounting suggestions

Update: Topic/summary changed. I received information that S775 has a different hole pattern and no retention bracket, so EXPLICIT support from heatsink manufacturers is necessary. If anyone KNOWS for absolute certain of an alternative to the ThermalTake Towers that WILL work on a Socket T motherboard, please let me know!

That said, I'm now asking for help on how to mount the very heavy Tower112 and still be able to take my system to LAN parties. Any suggestions on bracketing the TOP of the heatsink? I'm planning on putting this system into a Lian Li PC-V1200B.

Original post follows:

I see a LOT of badmouthing of TT here, and as a frequent LAN gamer, the sheer weight of the Tower112 worries me. I'd have to find some way of mounting the top of the heatsink to something so my motherboard doesn't have to do all the heavy lifting. So I'd prefer to go with another option.

However, I looked at the websites of every heatsink manufacturer I could think of (Zalmann, Thermalright, Swifttech) and can't find anything EXCEPT the towers listed as compatible with the LGA775 socket (they're all Socket 478). Is anyone familiar with anything powerful enough to cool this monster without snapping my rather expensive P5AD2 Premium motherboard? 😛

I would like something at least somewhat quiet, by the way. I've had a Delta fan before, on a 1.2Ghz Thunderbird, and I could stand NOT to have a vacuum cleaner motor inside my case. I know, it may be impossible to build a silent Prescott PC, but I'm at least going to try for not waking the neighbors with it. 😀

So, any suggestions? Does anyone know of anything I can use? If not, any suggestions for mounting a Tower112? Metal brackets? Fishing line through vents in the bottom of my PSU? Anything to avoid hearing a frightening *SNAP!* while lugging my system to/from my car :disgust:

I don't know, that's part of the problem. I know the 478 heatsinks mount to motherboards placing a tremendous amount of pressure on the CPU, whereas with Socket 775, the same pressure isn't necessary because of the pressure applied by the socket. Whether this means different considerations for the heatsink manufacturers or not, I don't know. Also, no Socket 478 processor is going to theoretically 150W of power (or so I've read), making for a greater cooling need 😛

hmm..... 666th post, maybe ill play some doom 3 to celebrate

Congrats 😀

Hey, thanks 😉

Anyway I think all of those will fit the bill, but maybe send an email to forzenCPU or wherever you plan to buy from to make sure. I also agree with Tabb Thermaltake is over rated, unless your into LED's and flashy paint jobs (ugly things)

Well, I finally got an answer on another forum, and explicit S775 support IS necessary.

S775 has a different hole pattern and no retention bracket.

So, it seems for now the Thermaltake Tower112 and Silent Tower are my ONLY choices. Sad but true.

That said, I may have to change the topic of this post and ask for suggestions on how to mount a Tower112 without snapping my motherboard in two when I take it to a LAN party 😛

There really isn't anyway of doing what you asking, it would be extreamly difficult at best.

Anyway the silent tower can't be the only S775 HS/F out there...

Zalman is making an adapter that allows the CNPS7000 series coolers to be used on socket 775. IMHO, that is a lot better solution than that Thermaltake monstrosity 😉

Just found out that Gigabyte makes and adapter that will allow the Thermalright XP90 to be used on socket 775 😀
