Let me know how you decide and feel free to talk to me, since you seem to be in a similar position as far as "going against the grain." (Although Stanford may be held in higher regard than HYP where you're from, so maybe not.)

EDIT: sorry, I combined the stats of faenix's post with krk's schools. So i guess the advice is available for both of you (if you want it, I mean), but I was more referring to krk's post, then.

whoa whoa whoa , you go to Duke?

It's nearing the Early Decision deadline, and I was just wondering, where is everyone applying? And are you applying ED?

I'm applying ED to Wake Forest. I'm pretty confident I can get in, I've taken all Honors/AP classes, accelerated a year in math, varsity for XC/indoor/outdoor track. My SAT scores weren't stellar (700m/590v), but I think they'll be good enough. I've completed the smaller essays, and I'm working on the 2 bigger ones now.

Good choice! I'm a freshman at Wake myself, and it's great! "Free" laptops (really really nice Thinkpads) for all students. Look me up when you get here man, and PM if you have any questions!

Go Deacs!

You mean, $2,000 of your tuition laptops?

Exactly, hence the quotes :)

Duke was my first choice school for a while until I visited Washington University in St. Louis.

I'm applying to huge universities as well as a few smaller colleges. Reason? More moolah to pass around to the lowly poor kid (and me, the fairly-well-to-do middle class white kid who's gonna get screwed come Need-based fin aid time)

If you read my edit, I simply stated that I addressed the wrong person. I was actually addressing you, KRK.

I knew that was coming :)

Actually, they're $100 of my tuition to pay for "free" iPods for freshmen. (I had to spend my own money on an MP3 player.)

Whoops sorry...

I thought you were saying that you combined faenix's stats with my schools in your post and were making it up. I misread it, I see now.

I dont think Stanford is held with higher regard here its that for what I want to major in, they are the best. I also visited the campus in April and took classes there this summer during their summer quarter (the school year is divided into quarters rather than semesters, summer is optional). I loved it there, so thats why its my first choice.

My stats are:
Took the hardest classes my school offers
4.988/3.97
4 5's
2 4's
1 3
AP National Scholar w/ Distinction
National Merit Semi-finalist (applied for finalist)
SAT 1580 (780 Math 800 Verbal)
SATIIs (from this month): 780 Writing 750 US Hist (took APUSH last year) 750 Math IIC (took algII/trig in 9th grade)
Did JV Wrestling
JETS President, Mu Alpha Theta (Math Club) Historian, Model United Nations Research Director, Nat'l Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society
Volunteer at YMCA - over 500 hours, member of Teen Leaders service club, Sports Commission

Best of luck KRK. The good news is that your stats are definitely up there. (Bad news is that they could make 3 full classes of freshmen with stats like those.) Did you get good grades when you took some courses there? That will be as big a factor as anything else (will validate your HS achivement if you achieved well on their scale). Also, what is your intended major? An uncommon major is an underrepresented minority just like race, so it may help.

I assume you're from CA, so you'll be in lots of compeition. You'll definitely end up with your choice of schools, though. Best of luck.

P.S. You doing wrestling this year? Not saying you should do something you wouldn't do otherwise, but something like that would really round you out as an applicant. Right now the only thing that's lacking is something in sports or the arts, some sort of non-academic skill or interest that separates you from the stacks of perfect GPAs, NHSs and academic clubs. If you have some sort of outside passion in which you've developed a skill (anything from sports to ballroom dancing to a special project you set up through your volunteering), it would really put a personality to your application, so I'd definitely include it or work it into your essay at least.

Best of luck, and let me know if you end up in Durh'm.

KRK, I'm not gonna quote your post again, b/c it's been quoted to hell, but those are really nice stats. I don't think Duke or Stanford will turn you down. Although stranger things have happened...

Anyway, best of luck with you college search, and if you do end up a Dookie, one thing is for certain: you have an ass whooping appointment courtesy of the Wake Forest Basketball team this year.

Bring it, Kahuna :)

(Although you guys are better than us on paper this year. We went from possibly the best college BB team ever in the early entry era to an average ACC team with the screwjob of Luol and Shaun--you guys still look good!)

Northwestern's the definate first choice, though.

i see you are from chicago, so that means you've probalby visited NU. I'm a senior and I can't wait to get out of here. You arne't really going to get the "typical" college expereince, its a really small school. But then I am from cali and the weather here sucks!

the good thing about NU is that its a consutling and ibanking whore, I checked my friends on campus recruiting at cal and they don't get jack crap compared to us
