HS Kid Charged With A Felony For Refreshing His School's Web Site

Link to the slashdot article because the comments made include other quotes from the prosecution not to mention a /. style DoS of their own...

article, the comments are definately a good read

"An 18 year-old boy was recently arrested in Ohio for telling fellow students to refresh the schools web page in order to slow down the server. He is being charged with a felony and is currently being held in jail. According to Canton City Prosecutor Frank Forchione 'This new technology has created a whole wave of crimes, and we're just trying to find ways to solve them.'"

original article

 for the school officials and prosecuters

Wow....thats fvcking stupid. The prosecutors are stupid for trying to charge him with a felony, and hes stupid for thinking it was a smart idea to do a makeshift DoS attack on the school's server.

As a condition of my return to ATOT I am no longer allowed to own or come within 50 feet of any keyboard with "THAT" key 🙁

So... Sony can install a rootkit on thousands or more PCs without consent from their owners, and not suffer any criminal liability, but this guy gets a felony?

hmm well he did do a DOS attack. on one hand he should get in trouble but a felony?

Exactly. To let him off with nothing will encourage other teenage idiots to do the same, but a felony? Please. Like the school isn't aware what that can do to his future prospects. Punishment is one thing, but ruining his entire life for what he did as a kid is outrageous. Give him a slap on the wrist, sure, but let the kid go to college and get a freakin' job at least.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but 18 years is more than enough time to graduate past "kid".

Hey lets all go to the schools site and... 😛

Too late, someone else got to it first.

They are idiots by punishing this kid. It is causing others on the web to do it for fun because others heard about this kids DOS plan.

Felony? That's WAYYYY overboard. Hopefully, he's found innocent of such a charge.

I'm thinking it's going to be amusing to watch the school's website for a while...

Well, it is a DOS. Felony? No. But talk about a biased news article. He was only telling other students how to refresh a page............. in order to crash the server. Oh.
