hi guys,

i am currently running my axp 2100 @ 2700+ speeds, but the only hs/fan that i had at the time when building this system was a Thermaltake Volcano 7 hs/fan. It cools decently, yet it run at 5000 rpm, and is quite a loud unit for me. I just recently swapped it out with a SK6 + Delta 38 8k screamer, and it dropped the temp by 2°C, yet as you know, this is even louder than the Volcano 7, as it run close to 8000 rpm constantly. My cpu runs at 43°C idle, and 51°C under load.

The main hs/fan i've been looking at lately is the Vantec Aeroflow TMD Fan, model # VA4-C7040 hs/fan unit. From the review i have read of it, it does quite a good job cooling, while not having a fan that is too loud when running at a full 5600 rpm. Does anyone here have this fan, or has anyone tried it out? Your opinions and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I dont want to spend more than $35-$40 on a new hs/fan.

I have also read and heard quite a bit about the Thermalright SLK-800U hs unit. Your suggestions on why this is a better cooler than the Vantec Aeroflow VA4-C7040 would also be quite helpful.

Mind you, I would not be pairing the SLK-8000U with a high-speed Vantec Tornado fan. Probably a Sunon fan running ~3200 rpm or so...

thanks in advance...

The SLK-800 is a monster of a cooler, and it works. I have an Aeroflow and it does a pretty nice job of cooling my overclocked 2500. At 2315 MHz @ 1.80V it kept the CPU at a frosty 42C under load with an ambient temp of about 20C. The fan is almost whisper quiet. I can barely hear it over my Vantec Stealth case fan, but one thing to know, it can be tricky to get on\off the socket. For normal usage and minor overclocking, go for the Aeroflow, but if you're going for the ultimate in cooling or bragging rights get the SLK-800U. Another thing, make sure you got the U version if your motherboard has the four mounting holes around the socket, as this will put less stress on the motherboard and socket.

wow, thanks for the great explanation and detail MonkeyDriveExpress!

however, with all the info, you leave me even more confused as to which one to pick, hehe. I'm not sure if just running a 133fsb cpu at 166fsb would be a "minor" overclock, but I would definitely like to be able to lower the cpu's vcore from 1.75 to something under 1.7 (say, 1.65) and I am sure that would also help lower the temps below the 50°C mark.

I can get the Aeroflow w/ TMD fan for about $34 or, go after the SLK-800A for about $30, and add a regular 3000rpm Sunon fan to it.

ahhh.... the choices to make ;)

thanks again...
