Gonna pick up hobby of web dev. I somehow managed to pick up HTML, javascript, CSS, and C just by sheer number of hours being glued to the computer at home. Used some editors before, but it seems to me I like to handcode stuff more than wizards, guides, etc.

So, looking for an editor that is useful for managing multiple files, good global search/replace, and easy code testing(browser link to editor).

edit : more I think about editors, more I realize that what I essentially need is something like emacs but more "windows style," smaller in size(exclude all the crap overhead on emacs, btw anyone noticed how bloated that thing has become??), and a bit geared for web coding.

Since it's a hobbie, looking for a freeware or inexpensive shareware suggestions please.

BTW, know of any good tutorial sites for perl, java, SQL, and networking?

Thx.

If you really like to roll your own and hate wysiwyg interfaces and wizards on html editors, I'd suggest Arachnophilia. Very plain system, but highly customizable from a functional standpoint. Will link to multiple browsers, has fantastic search and replace, and works reasonably well with the TopSheet CSS tool.

http://www.arachnoid.com/

A lot of people who like to do both hand-coding and wysiwyg manipulation like 1st Page. I tried an earlier version that was a bit buggy, but I understand that it's very much improved and quite powerful.

Arachnophilia is "careware". 1st Page is freeware. Neither will cost you a dime.

Yeah, for HTML editing, 1st Page is very nice. Right now I am fooling around with PHP, so I use a different editor for that, but for HTML-only 1st Page owns. Can't wait to see that mysterious next version of the program evrsoft is talking about.

Moonbender,

I'm kind of glad this came up. I downloaded 1st Page today and will probably install it and give it a look-see this weekend, just to see how the other half lives.

What do you use for your PHP chores? I use an outstanding little text editor called NoteTab Pro. It has a Clipbook Language that works wonderfully well for production of Perl and Gawk scripts. I also write memos and letters with it (using Courier New) because it cheeses off managerial types.

:D

Jim

thx jaywallen,

I will try out 1st page.

There definitely is an advantage of having wysiwyg type of ability in an editor to simplify routine coding as long as the code generation is clean and logical (and editable).

Not all of us can afford to purchase dreamweaver or homesite.

Btw, kudos here for Notetab as well. I use notetab for just about every text(including alot of document compositions) related purposes.

Hi, Edgy.

Good luck with 1st Page. From what I remember of it, it's got a pretty impressive feature list, and a nice interface -- though I doubt that you'll find it very similar to emacs.;)

BTW, I know people who use NoteTab Pro as an HTML editor. It's got functions that make it well-suited for page production, though I'd have to customize it quite a bit to make it suit my working style. I guess that's the point, though. The little ah heck is certainly customizable, or at least the Pro version is. (I always get confused when I try to understand just why it is that they have so many versions of it.)

Regards,
Jim
