HPT370/372 won't get past Scanning Devices on 8K5A2+

If I connect my new Maxtor 300GB drive to either IDE3 or IDE4 - the HPT372 on-board RAID controller ports, the system does not get past the scanning devices screen. The drive is correctly detected, but nothing else happens. Ctrl-H has no response.

If the drive is not connected to the port, I am able to get into the Highpoint BIOS Setting Utility by pressing Ctrl-H.

Tested the drive out as a slave on a motherboard IDE port as slave and it works well.

Switching jumber from CS to Master did not help.

Formatting the drive on the motherboard's IDE port and then connecting to the Highpoint port did not help.

Highpoint BIOS version is 2.34 - only 1 version behind the latest by Highpoint; also the latest for the Epox board.

Running out of ideas. Please help!

This is pretty depressing as I was finally getting ready to set up a RAID 1 with 2 Maxtor 300GB drives.

I do have my board overclocked; could that be an issue? Anybody else with this board have a similar problem. Could it be because of the large drive?

Worked!

Set to Load Optimized Defaults.

Now have to figure out what was hindering it.

I was having trouble earlier with a hang sometimes when Quick POST is disabled. POST would hang before the memory test. I am beginning to suspect that my VDIMM needs to be increased. Could that be the issue with the Highpoint controller?

Put it back to stock, then post back.

Found the culprit. Enabling USB Mouse Support in the BIOS causes this problem. When disabled, the controller moves past post and boots. Wierd. Suspect it may be an IRQ issue (not that I have any particular device connected or anything like that...).

If anyone has a similar situation and wants to compare, post here and I'll follow up on this.

Hope this helps someone else. I lost a whole day tracking this silliness down.
