if you are really cheap you can config the x1000 with the celeron 1.2 M

making it $922 after rebate and 10% off.

you can always upgrade the chip on your own later if its too slow for you. a pentium M 1.4 is less than the $150 difference on ebay.

the x1000 comes with P-M not P4.

i have read that the celeron-m does not speed step and runs hot. replacing your own cpu may void your warranty. opening laptops is more difficult than opening up desktops.

i've had an hp laptop before and swapped cpus. they even warrantied my laptop for a non cpu problem.

the celeron -M does not run hot. it is a pentium -m with 512k cache instead of 1 MB. it doesnt have speedstep though.

yes i looked all this crap up comparing the d500 dell and the x1000.

for anyone who cares the d500 is 4.9 pounds if you remove the optical drive and use a 4 cell battery (it comes with a 6 cell, the x1000 comes with an 8 cell). from what ive heard a 6 cell battery makes the d500s battery life bad.

i'm leaning towards maybe getting an x1000, but the build time seems quite long.

i finally did it and got the x1000 with the centrino. came to $1040 with just dvdrom and academic discount. have some extra RAM here.I really like the widescreens and I don't think Dell makes any widescreen ones. so that's the swing vote for compaq AFAI'm concerned.

I am hoping it will ship by the end of the week, as I think they have the bodies laying around and they just have to insert the right size HD, optical, RAM and video. How long can that take??

for the celeron-M, since it doesnt have speedstep, won't it run hotter than a normal P-M? it may not technically run hotter, but because it is full speed all the time, heat builds up faster. but i'll take your word for it.

well the thing is a p4 -M even at full speed only dissapates like 30 watts max. so its not really a bid deal. thats like 1/3 of a p4 3.0. not to mention the celeron -M has 1/2 its cache inactive (the cache makes up over half the die on the pentuim -m so this isa lot of inactive die assuming this is just a cut down pentium -m ) not to mention its still only running at 1.2 ghz (some of the higher end pentium Ms speedstep down to 1.2)

i figured out how to make this even hotter.

find an employee purchase program code from register at www.hpshopping.com/epp
im not sure what employers qualify but i saw that mine does from a flier in the lobby of the place i work.

it makes the lowest end one the

celeron 1.2
256mb , 40gb, 1280x800, radeon 7500 , dvd model after $100 rebate a blistering $850 + tax

i added the 802.11g/b wifi and 9200 32mb radeon to mine, and with 8.25 % CA tax - rebate will get it for $997 total

Did anyone consider the 17" LCD / S6000Z deal? Looks like you can get a 2400+ based box and a 17" LCD for about $523...

That seems pretty good to me.

Just about to jump on that deal but looked at the details of the rebate - you'll loose $50 of the $150 if you purchase a FP15 or FP17 monitor. That's a deal breaker for me.
