hp8100i plays but no sound

well got the driver configured for the hp 8100i under SuSE Linux and it will load a cd and when i launch the player from kde it is playing the cd but it wont put out sound.
if i disconnect the hp and set the sony cdrom to master and launch the kde cdplayer it works fine....any suggestions?
and also anyone have an hp 8100i configured to burn under linux and have a link to the howto ya used?

Do you have a cd audio cable coming from the burner? If not you need one. Other than that if you do then check to make sure the input it goes to isn't muted.

As for burning, it should work, but it's kinda messy. You have to recompile your kernel without IDE cdrom support (yeah, without), but enable SCSI CD-ROM emulation. When you reboot w/ this kernel all of your cd-roms (ide ones) will be detected as scsi cd-roms (and hence will be under different entries for /dev/. Because of this you'll need to update any symlinks that used to point to ide entries for cd-roms under /dev/). Then almost all Linux burner programs will just autodetect the IDE burner as a scsi burner.

I really wish they'd come up w/ a method a little less "kludgy", but that's all we got for now.
