HP XU800 Workstation RAM

I have an HP XU800 Workstation at work. It currently has 256 MB (4 sticks x 64MB) of PC600 ECC RDRAM. We are considering converting this machine into a server for the office as it has SCSI drives in it already with most of our data already on it. I ordered 4x 256MB sticks of Samsung PC600 ECC RDRAM to replace the existing RAM as the first step in this upgrade. The system will not boot with the new RAM at all. I have tried every possible combination of the 4 sticks and every combination using any 2 sticks and the continuity modules that came with the computer. Nothing works- the BIOS will not post with any of this new RAM. I was able to get 3 of the 4 modules to work in another workstation in the office that uses non-ECC RDRAM. The 4th module will not work due to "continuity errors". This stick is obviously bad. However, 2 of the other 3 should work in the first machine and they don't. I have the latest BIOS for the motherboard, have reset the CMOS (several times now), and I am installing them in pairs with continuity modules in the second set of RIMMS. Does anyone have any experience similar to mine and any suggestions to help me? Please ask any questions you may have. Thank you in advance.

It sounds like you get memory that isn't compatible w/ your Workstation, sometimes some brands of memory don't just get along w/ some boards, I'd suggest returning the memory you got and trying a different brand

Get a BIOS update so it can support a higher number of RDRAM devices. Is that an Intel 840 chipset-based board (Pentium III) or is it Pentium 4?

Tha Kayak range (including XU800) only accept modules that have been validated for that specific model. HP memory is made by Kingston, so your best bet is to go to Kingstons page and search for compatible modules by using their search engine. Or by original HP modules for it. Those Samsung (or any other ECC) modules are not going to work.

Linky to compatible memory.

Thats kinda weird because Kingston RDRAM are usually rebadged Samsung memory with Samsung chips. I had an Intel OR840 motherboard before with the 840 RDRAM chipset and it didn't like memory higher than 128mb sticks. A BIOS upgrade fixed it; the older BIOS didn't support 16-device(?) RDRAM memory, which is what most 256mb RDRAM sticks are. Since both have the same chipset, I suspect they have the same problem. The XU800 mobo is probably made by Tyan (S2520) so thats another place to look for answers...

Another question: Why PC600? The board supports PC800....

This is my first real experience with RDRAM. This workstation is very particular about what hardware goes into it. We've had problems before with other devices, etc. I wanted to buy PC800 to give it a bit of a boost, but I thought I'd better stick with the 600 since that's what was in there to begin with and I knew it worked. Guess that thought process backfired on me ;)

According to HP, BIOS IA.11.09 or higher supports 512MB memory modules LINK.
Just wondering if you do have that BIOS (or higher)...

I have a bunch of XU800s (840 chipset based) as well as a bunch of earlier Kayak XU/XWs (BX440 based). The XU800 requires ECC memory. It's made to use PC800 memory, although you should be able to use slower (PC700, PC600) memory. I have bought non-HP memory for these and had it work. HOWEVER, it was PC800. It may be that your problem lies with the PC600 256mb memory, and not with any other particular characteristic. ECC is necessary, however. It definitely won't work with non-ECC memory. Been there, done that.

The XU/XWs will run with just about any memory, ECC, ECC+registered, or none of the above. For people wanting to set up a good inexpensive server, the BX440 based Kayaks are something of a sleeper...Good build, cheap to upgrade.

Can you give me specific examples of what brand you bought that did work?

It was Kingston. Got it through Dell a long time ago at a good price, at least for the time.
