HP widescreen crt bought year ago now seeing diagonal lines on startup

In the past few months, I have noticed when I start this widescreen CRT monitor (that many of us here bought from that seller some time ago on Ebay) there are radiating white lines very visible against the black screen.

They are not noticable when in use some time later playing games, etc. I have yet to let it sit while on over an hour and just bring up a black screen to see if they are there still.

Since they were not there at the beginning, what does this now indicate (to those that have knowledge of this)? Am I once again in the market for another screen?

Can you provide any pictures? I think I know what you're talking about, but I want to be sure.

I'll provide my guess anyway: I think this is a common issue with older Trinitron screens; they seem to get brighter over time. I bought two second-hand HP P1110 CRT's (21", 4:3) about two months ago (for $25 each :p) and they were way too bright, and I also saw those diagonal lines you're talking about. I managed to find a post on an online forum with the procedure to get into the monitor's service menu; once in there I was able to lower the G2 voltage and it looked as good as new. (EDIT: My CRT's are also similar in that they're brighter upon startup and then settle back into a normal brightness after being on for a while.)

In case the procedure is the same for your monitor, here's how I get into my service menu: turn off the monitor, then turn it back on while holding the middle (enter/select) button on the front of the monitor. This should bring up a password prompt; for my monitors it was 7711. There's all sorts of stuff you can change in there, but like I said, G2 voltage is probably what you're looking for.

Hope this helps!

No camera, and I suppose if I had one, I would need a tripod to take a picture of a CRT screen within a dark room to get the lines on a picture.

Well, that's alright, I'm 99% sure I know what you're talking about anyway. :p

What controls are on the front of the monitor? Based on your description I'm almost positive that your G2 voltage has just drifted too high over the years. I found a huge 30+ page thread on another forum discussing this issue as related to various Trinitron CRT's.

I will check when I get home.

I haven't fiddled with them in a while.

I remember this HP has a roll down / up cover for the controls. That is the only thing I remember right now.

After the monitor warms up try running the Image Restoration feature (its in the Color menu), The trick is to adjust the monitor's brightness setting *higher* before running Image restore (set brightness to around 50), Then turn the brightness down after running it, Doesnt always work but worth a try. Only other option is to lower the G2 voltage which will fix it for sure.

I'm blind and forgetful...where in the HP A7217A is the brightness control?

I see Screen, Center, Conv, Geom, Exit, Color, Lang, Size, and Option.

It's not in Color/Screen/Option

Press up and down on the menu knob to adjust Brightness , dont press it in like you normally would to access the menu. Left and right adjusts the Contrast. After you adjust it press the knob in twice to exit.
