HP - Vista Support for Recent Devices

Okay, I was told to be patient and wait for announcements on support for Vista. Last night I looked up new driver availability for my HP ScanJet 4670. This scanner was purchased new about 2 years ago. The FIRST OS for which it was designed was WinXP. It was NOT cheap. It was about the top of the line of HP's consumer grade scanners at the time. And last night I see official notice at the HP support site that the scanner won't be supported under Vista.

The same notice said that they (HP) hoped that I would consider upgrading to a more recent HP scanner.

Like HELL I will! If this is the way they're going to operate I've purchased the last HP anything I'm ever going to buy. When the consumables on the HP printers I have run out I'm buying different printers. I don't care if it's going to cost me more money overall. I really can't believe they won't create new drivers for this thing. They updated the drivers for all of ltheir damned printers -- because they can keep selling the user their consumables for those. But no updates for the scanners. (I checked on the other, slightly older one we have at home. No driver update for it, either.) Screw this. And screw you, HP!

 
HP did the same thing when XP came out. They dropped support for many expensive 1- and 2-year old scanners and FAX machines. I don't recommend HP to my clients anymore.
 
HP has done this with scanners and new OSs since Win95, they've always been lousy about offering new OS scanner drivers. Not that Umax was any better.


Edit: Vista may still offer basic functionality using built-in drivers. I was able to use my Umax under XP that way.
 
Well, using the TWAIN drivers and IrfanView I can get really poor quality b&w scans off of the 4670 in Vista. Would work for faxing, which I don't do. No purpose in bothering, really.

I'm not much of a scanner user anyway. But whatever scanner I use in the future, it ain't gonna be an HP. Nor will anything else I use.

Okay, well, I'm stuck with a couple of the HP/UX servvers at work. None of my money goes to those folks any more. And none of the corporate money I control. I've had it with companies whose marketing philsophy controls EVERYTHING about the way they operate. The customer has to be considered once-in-a-while.
 
HP pissed me off when they quit making calculators. That was the one thing they did better than anyone else in the world, and they stopped 🙁 . Now they make average computer supplies. I'd really like to see what a 48gx would look like today if they'd kept up development.
 
Just to let you know. You can use your hp 4670 under vista with limited features. If you open up the "HP Photo & Imaging" app that is on your desktop and hit scan document.
 
Hello. I have an old Scanjet 6300c .. HP tells there is no support for the device under vista. However I installed the XP drivers and software and it's working fine. I downloaded hp scan software and pointed vista to c:/sj6xx directory for the drivers.
 
That is one reason I intend to stay with XP .... all my software and
peripherals all work fine ... However, I will consider trying Office 2007
sometime in April or so .. that is one upgrade that may actually be nice
to use.
 
Your vendor is under no liability to support the products they vend under Vista if that product was launched BEFORE Vista. That said, most vendors will try to support older equipment where it makes sense. This is costly to do. If they sold a ton of that scanner they might be more inclined to support it under Vista. -if they didn't sell that many.... maybe not.

Additionally, many vendors bundle 3rd party software with their products to enable that product's functions... ie; scanners, and burners are common 3rd party software bundling opportunities with the hardware vendor. The Vendor would have to license the new Vista versions of those software packages to also work with VIsta if they wanted to offer support beyond just drivers.

I work for a major vendor. I just had a customer ask for Vista drivers for a three year old system that has no business running Vista.

Personally...... I'll switch to Vista as my main OS when I have a compelling reason - When I need a new PC, or I need some new hardware like Printers and so forth that don't come with XP support and VIsta only.

HP is notorious for that...
I got lucky I spent the better of 3 hrs and found a driver that supported my HP printer...

How hard? More like how costly. It cost us over $250k to write an initial driver for one unique piece of hardware. It's certainly much cheaper to fix or update drivers, but I honestly don't know what's involved with porting a driver to Vista.

I don't either. I recommend Canon now, then again i don't know if they are going to support some of their products in Vista either....

Edit: W00t!, Canon has Vistax64 drivers for my printer. 🙂

I haven't had any luck finding a driver for it yet. HP says "no support, please buy a newer model".

Ugh.

 
You can install the HP Scanjet 3400c and the LTX scanning software. Here is how;

*This applies to a USB connection only.*

First, download the XP software from HP. The file is called sj652.exe.
Change the file extension from .exe to .zip.
Right click the file and select to extract the contents.
Once extracted find the setup.exe file and run it.
A window will pop up saying that the software is designed to run on Windows 98, ME or XP. Click OK.
A couple of seconds later a new window pops up saying it didn't install correctly and would you like to reinstall using the Recommended Settings.
Say Yes. It installs. Reboot the computer.

Presto! you can now use the LTX scanning software and the scanner with no problems. 😀
