HP Vectra PPro and sound card lockup in Win2k

Hello,

I've got an HP Vectra Pentium Pro system here. It's got the Intel FX set, PPro 200, 128 megs of simms, S3 5446 (i think) on board video, Sound Blaster 16 PnP ISA, and a 3Com ISA NIC. Everything works fine under 98, but installing the sound card under 2k locks the computer as soon as it plays a sound. Usually the sound will begin to play for about a half second, then the computer will lock and the mouse pointer will usually be corrupted.

Tried new video card drivers, they didn't work. I tried removing the NIC and disabling everything on the mobo I could, that didn't work. One thing I haven't tried yet is a PCI video card. That's next.

Any suggestions?

Two more (minor) questions. 1. Is the "Windows 95 Installed" option in the bios the same as ACPI on/off? 2. Why doesn't the computer shut it's power down in Win2k when I shut down Windows? It does in 98.

Thanks a lot for any help you can give me.

Update: I've tried a PCI video card. Nothing. Funny thing though, now instead of locking after a half second, it will actually play the Windows chime sound 1.5 times through.

Please help.

No offense but why are you trying to replace NIC's and video cards when it's the sound card that seems to be causing the problem. Does the systen work fine with the sound card removed??? If so see if you using the most current drivers or try another sound card.

It does work without the sound card. It also works with the sound card as long as no sounds are played. I was removing other devices to try to eliminate conflicts that could have been causing the problem. Sorry that I didn't specify this earlier. :)

Btw, it was three different ISA sound cards, not one. An Awe 32, a SB 16 PnP, and a really old SB 16 non-PnP.

And the cd worked fine in another computer just a day before.
