HP USB printers under Linux

We have a small (8 pc's) peer to peer windows network with mostly XP SP2 desktops. The pc's are used via a terminal emulation package as data entry points for a D3 database application package running on a Linux server (latest release of Red Hat). There are a number of pc connected printers configured within Linux for use by the application. These are connected to the pc's via a combination of both parallel and USB cables. An example of a USB connected printer which functions as expected is an HP 3820. The two latest USB cable printers installed to pc's in the network (both HP 3650) appear to connect but will not actually output a print task initiated from the application. On the pc the job is shown as spooled and completely delivered (e.g. 2.4kb of 2.4kb) but no output is produced and the job never completes from the spooler perspective. I have been told that this problem relates to the printer driver and it's insistence on showing how much ink remains in the printer etc., but the HP3820 also does this. Is anyone aware of a work around?
