HP to ship Ubuntu PCs

HP's Sean Owen-Jones also said the company would shortly be releasing desktop and notebook PCs running Ubuntu Linux. The NX6110 notebook would be available shortly with Ubuntu and a desktop PC would also be available.
No more limited to the server/workstation world, HP may bring Linux to the masses.

With all the DRM related stuff related to Vista, there may be some shift in the PC world dynamics.

as soon as i can get my hands on a virtualization processor i'm going to be running multiple OSes at the same time

linux and windows (or maybe mac and windows) without rebooting - fvck yeah!

Yea this is good news. I really think Linux will gain a lot in popularity once Vista is released. No one is going to want to be forced to upgrade their hardware especially their high priced monitors because of DRM etc.

Sounds good to me.

I'd love to purchase a low priced HP-Ubuntu box to learn more about Linux. They just need to make sure they've got wide spectrum hardware and software compatability, b/c I guarantee that novice HP/Ubuntu owners are going to expect to buy windows apps @ Office Depot and run them at home. 😉

Every time i propose a new build to the Ubuntu community, there is some issue with compatability, so hats off to HP if they can get it going in the mainstream.

The only people who will need to upgrade is those who want to watch DRM-encrypted media at full res, otherwise it will just show in a drastically decreased resolution. It will be the exact same in your living room, only with much more expensive monitors. Anandtech and the internet as a whole are making way too big of a deal out of this because it's your only arsenal right now. Frankly, if everyone would quit STEALING, this wouldn't be a problem.

And to post on topic, Linux will NEVER be a viable common-user OS until it becomes user-friendly.

That's pretty cool. It could be really good for the distro if there are a lot of contributions coming back.
