Do I need to get the 4g version to use on a cell network? I thought att/verizon sold those little dongles that will allow a device to be used on a cell network. Does the 4g version not require the extra hardware and we just add the device to our att data plan or something?

The 4G version takes SIM card. So yeah, you can simply add it to your ATT plan and they'll give you a SIM card for it.

Having said that, if you bought the HP Stream 8 (which is the 4G version) Signature version from microsoftstore.com, it comes with free 200 MB/month data from T-Mobile for the life of the device. So depending on if T-Mobile's coverage is acceptable to you, this might be a better way to go.

Right. You can buy/rent the hotspots, which might be a good idea if you have other devices (often times the wi-fi only versions are cheaper), but it's another thing to have to carry around (and keep charged) otherwise you'd want the version with the cellular modem and yeah you'd just add it to your account (assuming you can, sometimes there's silliness, like Verizon refusing to certify one of the Nexus devices I recall).

Thanks. We're looking at a laptop for my wife who takes online courses. She has a lot of free time at work when she sets up for trainings, but no wifi. So if we could get a cheap laptop she can use for basic office tasks and the web for researching, on cellular, we'd like to go that way. I think the Stream 8 would be a little too small to do some actual work with (we have a gen1 n7 that is slightly smaller).
