HP ScanJet 6250 Problems

I have an HP ScanJet 6250 cxi that keeps loosing its USB connection (you try to use the machine and get an error message: "Scanner could not be initialized. Scanner not found." I've tried the HP website and it list pages of correction, none of which seem to work. Any suggestions would be helpful.

My "rig" is a home-built, P4 2.53, Gigabyte GA-8IHXP2 mainboard with 512 MB PC1066 RDRAM, HD=WD 120G "special edition" with two more in a striped RAID array, and ATI 9700 Pro graphics card (Gigabyte).
