Question HP sata power connector? [SOLVED]

Zepp

Senior member
I have an HP AIO PC that I want to add a sata HDD to. I can clearly see the sata cable connector on the board but am not sure where the power connects.

Is it this 4 pin connector I circled?

if so what kind of connection is this called so I can search for the proper cable.

Thanks

edit: on closer inspection I could see the tiny wording next to that connector says "HDD PWR"

so now I need to know what kind of adapter or cable to get

Yes the thing you circled is a 4 pin molex and you would need a molex to sata power connector.

it's only half as wide as a standard molex. it's barely the same width as the sata connector which is half as wide as sata power.

if there is some other molex form factor I can't seem to find anything about it searching

This is something that you should contact HP for information. usually, the SATA power cord comes directly off the PSU, but in an AIO, I'm guessing that it uses nonstandard parts.

The circled socket looks to me like a custom size 4-pin male molex connector.

I hate that sort of thing - it is purpose designed to make you buy the manufacturer's exclusive, no doubt over-priced, cable just to do the very simple job of powering a HDD.

Even worse with older models there's a good chance the makers will discontinue the cable and it will be more and more difficult to find as the years go by. Chances are too there will be no third party alternatives either.

It's possible the PC came with that cable and hard drive mount bracket originally but I got this one 2nd hand without any accessories.

I, partly, agree ^.

The black plug in that picture is a typical combined SATA PWR/DATA connector.

The white plug (PWR) on the adapter cable looks as if it will fit the top right MB 4-pin 'molex' socket on the MB. But the other plug, on the DATA side, does not look to me as if it will fit the standard MB SATA DATA socket.
