I did not know that, thanks, was about to pull the trigger. Pluses- $550 for a 17.3" FHD, and it has an internal 2.5" drive slot, lifted keyboard, and while this model is not backlit, others in this series seem to have one as an option. Also there doesn't seem to be any models with dedicated GPU, just the SoC Radeon. Minuses- I have yet to see any review on the lcd maybe tomorrow I can dig deeper into other models based on the same chassis. Have not read anywhere in documentation about max memory. Still an 8/16 core 5700U is going to be a nice cpu.

Also this sale has about 48 hours left on it.

I ordered one, after a quick search on Newegg for 5800U laptop, the cheapest one shown started at $1050, way out of my price range.

I was looking for a similar laptop also, because my 3 year old Acer had a "blue smoke event" while off and plugged in...
Thanks to being close to MC, I was able to snag a Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 with a 5800H and Nvidia 3050 GPU for $900 (now it's 950).
Here is the page: https://www.microcenter.com/product...156-laptop-computer-platinum-collection-black
I like it so far, only complain is they use a short NVMe (2242 I think) for the primary drive, so a regular 2280 will not fit. I upgraded the RAM to 32GB and added the SSD from the Acer, and am back in business. The 3050 GPU is better than a 1650 Super, but that's about it, a 1660 and above will beat it, but at least it has ray tracing :) I only had a 1050 on the Acer, so it's a bit of an upgrade there, and obviously the CPU is way batter than the 6 core i7-8750H in the Acer. MC also has laptops with 3050Tis and 3060s, but the price goes up fast (I see about $1000+ for laptops with the 3050Ti and $1200+ with the 3060, did not think it was worth it for me).

Nice, I liked this laptop because it had no second gpu, I never use it just one more thing to break :) Being covid retired, price point is everything to me. Now what to do with 2x4GB sodimms this thing comes with.

Yeah, but from my experience mundane things like power supply circuits go before GPUs... Before the Acer I had an ASUS laptop with core i5 and a 460M Nvidia card (I think, or maybe it was 425M), GPU was a bit power hungry, but worked OK for its' time, I even sold the laptop eventually. Unless I can fix the Acer, it may be a total loss there...

So I asked in HP forum for more info on this laptop HP laptop thread and got a link for the service manual for the 17-cp0xxx line her- 17-cpoxxx Service manual One of their experts said manual states 16GB ram limit but states that's wrong. We shall see.

And yes, ballonshark, there's always a deal, but getting just what you want at the price point you want is a whole nuther deal.

gibster, what is the problem with your Acer? At 3 years old motherboards should be available at a reasonable price.

It was plugged in but off, and it seems like some charging circuit perhaps got fried. I smelled electric smoke. Tried turning it on, laptop does turn on kind-of (keyboard lights up), but does not boot or even get to the BIOS. The charger light does not come on any more, so the battery is not being charged, which makes sense. Not sure if the diagnostics fail and nothing happens because of that. Have not opened it up yet all the way to see what exactly happened, for now I just scavenged the parts I could (RAM and SSD). I figure I may need a mobo replacement, I don't think there are separate cards or circuits for charging the battery other than on the mobo itself. It was still a viable laptop (i7-8750 and GTX1050), had 32GB RAM, 1TB m.2 + 2TB SSD in it, so it was loaded and until now worked really well. Since I have a replacement, I'm not hurting, but it still sucks...

Yeah I had an I7 4700 17" FHD which would have been fine but it won't charge the battery. Same as yours power circuit on mobo. I may tear it down again see what's up. Get a lot of power blips out in the sticks so I got sick of that one. Had put a used mobo in it, to switch from this Dell with a 15.6 FHD it has an I7 6700 but my eyes strain a bit. Too bad I can't use the memory, it's ddr3.
