I bought an HP laptop used, but it still has the recovery partition on it. I wanted to burn that onto some discs, but being used the standard HP software (including that) isn't on there. I haven't found a place to download it, so is there one or a better solution for the same thing?

Is that the only way? I mean I know the software comes with HP computers so I'd think I could find it somewhere. Once I get that I'll be good to go.

Quick Warning. I'm waiting on my HP to get returned from warranty repair (thank God for 3 year warranty). I ahve the Vista Recovery disk for my laptop (cost 19$). This disc FAILED during recovery, as did the Recovery partition. Luckily i backup nightly, nothing lost. But DO NOT TRUST THESE DISCS to bring your system back. Some Google scanning will show that HP's recovery system has VERY high chances of failure. Have your swsetup folder burned onto a DVD and verified all the time, and a Vista disc on hand. That way in a pinch you have a pure vista and your drivers in the swsetup folder. I had the Vista disc, but not the swsetup folder, thus i'm in the hole i'm in now..waiting.

Yeah I've heard they aren't the greatest, but I read an article recently on how somebody got the HP discs to work properly using some hidden options in the recovery menu that a tech told them about. It's usually not a problem as I never have anything important not burned to a disc but it's just a pain to reinstall everything.

What windows do you have? I check HP/Compaq download website and found "HP Update for Recovery Manager" but it is for Windows Vista only.

if you hit F10 while booting, it should bring up the recovery system. you can recover back to factory state, and the "hp help and tools" recovery program will be back in the program list.

if that doesnt work, 1-800-HP-INVENT and get the discs.

not to revive a super old thread, but i just purchased an HP laptop and was wondering:

if i create the recovery discs from the partition on the hdd, will i be able to install a bare version of the OS (vista home premium 64 bit) or will it automatically install HP software)?

thanks.

It is supposed to bring the machine back to what it was when it left the factory.
