This appears to be the new/upgraded version of the very good N40L. I have an N40L and it's a VERY solid little machine. This little thing can hold up to 7 drives with proper mounts and/or hacks.

Use coupon code HPN5413US

Current Shellshocker deal (3/25/13 only): $299 -$15 coupon - $50 rebate = $235

Old deal:
$339.99
-$50 with Promo Code AFNJ0379
-$50 rebate
=$239.99 with free shipping

AMD Turion II Model Neo N54L 2.20 GHz

Rename to HP Proliant Microserver N54L

it's 2.2ghz versus the older 1.6 - otherwise the same.

Can use a NC360T cut down to x1 slot
Can use a P400 ($25) raid controller (battery extra)
Can Use a P410 ($125+) raid controller (battery/cap extra)

Bios mods include Turning all ports to full sata speed, and OA 2.2 not sure what that means.

Also can push 16GB ECC if you align the stars.

Very nice machine. With the P410/512FBWC and nc360T on ESXi 5.0u2 with a pair of constellation 1TB SAS drives (hot-swap dual ported) - it ate about 50-55watts.

Very nice little server, i'm disappointed they don't do the soft-raid (B120i/B320i) but the P400 smartarray is $25 used maybe $100 with a brand new battery.

You could run some SSD's off the sata ports for esxi swapping since 16gb of ECC Ram is tight for apps.

I would not recommend nexenta even at 2.2ghz. It's too much.

However if you think about it, you could run 5 drives off the sata ports, RDM to a VSA or windows and create an ISCSI target to share to other vm's on the same machine or to the network.

Pretty slick machine! I think some folks rock xbmc with it and a low power video card. It is heavy as heck though!

This is a great deal, I have 3 of the old one as storage server. The P410 is a better choice, the mini sas just plugs straight into it. I added the quad 2.5 to 5.25 bay in the empty 5.25 slot, add another 4 1tb 2.5 into it.. Max one out at 20TB. The 410 supports 4tb drives with the newest firmware

Is it strong enough to run a FreeNas system? I'm using an i3/16GB right now, but would like to reappropriate that equipment somewhere else if this would work.

Edit: Found a few threads saying that freenas works just fine on the proliant. Upgrade to 8GB though. I ordered one, great price! Thanks op!

it is like a coreduo cpu at best. DO NOT USE for ZFS the overhead is far too much, but with hardware raid it works great.

Also - remember [1,2] or 3tB or 4tb SAS versions are like 5-10% more - trust me when I say with hardware raid you will thank yourself for picking SAS over SATA. Always.

Sometimes its stupid things like sector size and maximum lun size that SAS(SCSI) addressed years ago.
