HP printheads still 100% in cartridge?

A refurb printer I ordered from Best Buy is printing bands, and multiple cleanings aren't helping. Now the cartridge appears both old and used and could easily be the issue, or I could return the damn thing and go through that process. HP still integrate the entire printing system into the cart, meaning new inks will most likely be the solution or should I just rma it?

I think that depends on which HP printer you are talking about.

The one in my office just has ink tanks to replace, for example.

The one I have at home has the print heads in the cartridges.

If you only have a Black and a TriColor Cartridge, then the print heads are in the cartridge.
If your printer has a Black and usually 4 seperate Colors, then the print heads are in the printer itself. They can be removed and replaced (not super expensive or maybe take them out and clean with denatured alcohol and try again) .. a Model # of your HP Printer would help to determine where the print heads are and how to get new ones, if needed.

Thanks! Officejet 5740. It's black and tricolor, so I'm thinking print heads are integrated. Great! It's a weird problem - always on the 2nd page there's gaps in the black print areas. Hopefully new ink fixes the problem.
