I'm thinking about getting an HP OfficeJet printer and I'm wondering if there are any pitfalls with HP printers. Do HP printers transmit identifiable info about you to HP whenver you print something? I think I remember reading something like that, or maybe it was for a different manurfacturer. Are HP ink cartridges reasonably priced for the amount of prints you get from them?

LOL paranoied?

no HP does not transmit identifiable info about you to HP when printing something. and to the best of my knowledge no one else does either. they have no reason to! what would they transfer? "so and so printed 128904.jpg" or "grandma's old recipies"?? or might they beam your documents up to a secret space station where they hold a database of all the files everyone in the world prints? hmmm things to ponder....

if your thinking about printing money.. dont do it

in regards to everything else.. HP printers are very good printers! they last a long time and the ink is a reasonable value (ink is always a rip off).

HP's a rock solid. I just bought a 1320tn laser because I still have an HP printer from circa 1992/1993 that is still working reliably to this day. we have another one onthe office that has got to be seven years old now and still going.

As far as your paranoid self....... there are select LASER printers that print special watermarks on the paper when you print ...just in case you decide to print money. Either way it'sno big deal as anyone can pay cash and not have a way to be known what printer with what watermark they have etc.....Anyway... you can find out more about that via google. It's really nothing to worry about.

The only all-in-one's I've dealt with, HP specifically, are the 1300 and 1310 series. The install I would grade as fair, workability good, but in it's favor a very quiet working machine. As for just printers Epson, Canon and HP. My favorite is Epson, but noisey,
Canon, functional, HP good + quiet. Although Epson is my favorite it's hard to argue with the HP's that are out there. Good Luck!

Lexmark sucks big time IMHO... Had three of 'em, well, they never printed anything right... Replaced 'em with HP DeskJets (have a LaserJet as well) and now it works and prints like a charm... Maybe not very quiet (I recall my Epson being much quieter - but very bad too), but the printing's great...

Happy owner of a PSC 1610 (ALL IN ONE PRINTER i.e Copy / Scan / Print)...

cost next to nothing...

prints like a dream - very surprised by quality of Photo prints, even without 'Photo' ink cartridge... have just purchased a 'Compatable' / refill cartridge from eBay at a very reasonable price :)

I've had an HP LaserJet 1012 printer for 3 years and it's been great. Very good print quality and pretty fast for what I paid ($180 new). Prior to this I had two Lexmark deskjet printers that were not very good. They went through cartridges very fast that were expensive to replace. Plus, they had issues with jamming that the HP has never had. The Lexmarks were about $150 too (only $30 less than the HP)! If you can afford an HP LaserJet I say go for it.

This is what the OP is referring to. Apparently, with color printers, there is a way to identify the make and serial number of the printer. The printer manufacturers are doing this at the request of the Secret Service to help catch counterfeiters and other people commiting crimes. As long as you're not doing anything like that, I wouldn't worry.
