I am sitting here at a customer's house "installing" their hp printer. It took me all of 5 minutes to take it out of the box, connect it, set the date and time, etc. I started their cd install about an hour and a half ago, but it failed, froze, uninstalled itself, and now I started it again. It has been going for 15 minutes and is 5% complete. I recall installing old drivers just by navigating to the directory with the drivers, and selecting the driver. That takes about 1 minute? Why the hell does HP have their "express install" which is 250mb and takes an hour to install? What gives?

I feel for ya. I'm becoming less and less impressed with HP and their printers/drivers lately. It seems like they want to have an update utility, monitoring utility, configuration utility, photo suite, etc, etc all installed and running on startup. I've got a client that has an inkjet that prints pink and purple text instead of black. I uninstalled everything that's HP on the system and loaded the latest driver only file from HP's website yet the issue persists. I've spent 30 minutes on it and at that point told her it's a waste of money to troubleshoot a $80 inkjet printer. I recommended a cheap laser since she doesn't need color considering they have a networked color laser in the office.

head over to hp webstie and download the stripped driver set. It comes with none of the software and only has the drivers. I use my own OCR software, which is all you really need, and have had no problems on either my 4210 or 5510.
