HP print server and DHCP

Somebody help me understand the concept here.

If I have an HP internal print server that gets and ip address from a DHCP server, how exactly does this work ?

If I setup this printer on other workstations using the current ip address, what happens when it changes ? (I'm assuming that it will change)

If I assign the print server a static ip address, how do I avoid ip address conflicts ?

I've been beating my head on the wall trying to understand how this is supposed to work. neither way seems correct.

It should only change if your DHCP server or your print server goes down. (of course this could be never or often - depending on your network, etc etc)

You're DHCP server should be able to exclude certain IP's. Just set the printer server to one you want to use (say 1.2.3.4) and then tell your DHCP server NOT to allow that IP to be used in your DHCP IP pool.

Well, I took everything down and brought it up again and the print server got the same ip address as before. Still don't understand why a printer server would be assigned a dynamic ip but what's life without mysteries.

If I run into a problem I'll give it an ip way out from those currently being used and I should be ok. At least it is working, that's half the battle. Thanks for the help.

An easy way to make sure the Print Server always has the same IP address is: Check on your DHCP server, there should be an option to make static assignments. You'll have to know what the MAC Address is for the Print Server, but whenever the print server comes up, it will always have the same IP address.

You could just statically assign the Print Server an IP address outside of the DHCP range as well.
