HP Power Supply

I've been having trouble with my stock power supply on my HP Pavilion since about a month after I bought the system 2 years ago. It's a weak PS to start out with, only about 200W I believe, and with a DVD-ROM, a CD-RW, Floppy, 2 HD's, and a GF4 Ti4600 running off it, it tends to choke occasionally. The fan also will randomly give out and I have to nudge it to get it spinning again.

So basically i've decided it's time to finally replace the thing, but what i'm wondering is, is if it actually is replaceable, or is it a special kind of PS that you can only buy through HP themselves. I'm also wondering about how much it would run me, and if you can get higher wattage, as I would really like around 500W.

Specs :

Hewlett Packard Pavilion 753N

Oh and yes I know, ewww pre-built computers, it was free, and who would turn down a free 2.53ghz?

MODEL :

BESTEC

MODEL # :

ATX-1956D

I really wouldn't want another 200W in there, i'm just wondering if I could possibly drop anything better in there

That size power supply (dimensions-wise) is called PS3, and there's not much of that around these days. Best one I found was this one, which I bought locally from Fry's. Your case *may* be large enough to hold a full-size ATX PSU, or not.

So that option is pretty much out of the picture then. Hm. Would it be possible to drop all the guts of this rig into a new case with a new PSU? Or is the form factor of my mobo forked too?

I could be mistaken, but based on what I was able to dig up, it looks like the motherboard in that model Pavillion is an Asustek model P4B266LA, which appears to be similar to their regular P4B266 model.

Assuming that's the case, and HP didn't have the mounting holes moved around for a proprietary case design, then yes, you should be able to put it all in a decent "clone" case. 🙂

I found a 250W PS3 Sparkle unit at newegg and chiefvalue. Both stores rate above 9 at reselleratings. They are both out of stock of this item, but have an auto-notify which I signed up for 🙂
