HP Pavilion XH136 Screen and boot Problem

I have a friend's HP laptop and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with it.

First of all, whne I got it it wouldn't do anything, push power cpu fan would spin for about 30 secs then stop, and nothing.

I replaced the memory and now it'll power up, I get a bunch of colorful vertical lines, and the hard drive get accessed every now and then.

That's about it though.

Anyone?

Thanks!

Michael

Sounds like somebody dropped it!

Gently but firmly squeeze the DISPLAY CASE to see if the colored
lines move. If so, the panel is probably bad (loose internal connection).

Does anything display other than the COLORED lines?

Sounds like the motherboard got damaged somehow. Harder to test that theory out on laptops. Normally we can take the CPU off make sure it's not the CPU and memory. Pull all the parts off and test them on a different computer. I don't know how you can go about testing each part.

If the laptop is still under warranty, I would double check the laptop for any physical damage because HP will not accept the laptop with damage done to it. If everything looks good, send it back.
