HP Pavilion m8100y Power Supply Questions...

Hey all,

I ended up ordering an HP Pavilion m8100y media center PC the other day...hasn't arrived yet but i'm pretty excited! This is the first PC in years that I haven't built myself, but it would have actually cost more to build myself!

In any case, does anyone have any experience with the Pavilion m8100y PC's? I'm looking to upgrade the video card (from a GeForce 7500LE) to a GeForce 8600GT.

Does anyone know if the standard 350w power supply that comes with the m8100y will be good enough for the 8600GT? Or will I need to upgrade the power supply?

Thanks!

Get at least 8600GTS.

And I would replace/upgrade the PSU. The OEM PSU's are designed to provide ONLY the power required for the current configuration.

It's not worth the risk of instability, IMO.

well, the 8600GTS is more expensive than I want. I'm looking to stay under $100 for the video card.

also, the PC can be configured from HP to take an GeForce 8500GT 512MB card...does that card require as much power as the 8600GT 256MB?

This isnt always the case, you should be fine with the power supply provided. However, for reliability sake I would lean towards replacing the supply just because OEM supplies are typically crappy

thanks for the replies guys. i was actually looking to get that very evga card! the other option i saw was the MSI 8600GT w/ heatpiping. though i don't know if that'll fit well on the mATX motherboard...

I would recommend EVGA.

To be honest, I don't know much about the MSI quality, but I know that HP used some of their motherboards in the past.

I had the mATX MB in my Pavilion a250n, and it fit the 6800NU and 7800GS.
