HP Pavilion Elite d5000t - any opinions?

Considering a HP Pavilion Elite d5000t once they go on sale again. Any opinions? Specs I would be using would be Q9450, 8GB DDR2-800MHz, 1GB 9800GT, 750GB HD, Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer. Obviously, I would be going with Vista 64-bit to make use of the extra memory. Plus, it would allow me to take advantage of Adobe's Creative Suite 4 (64-bit) when it becomes available this fall.

How much does that cost? It shouldn't be hard to build something like that for around $1200-1300.

HP added the 1GB nVidia 9800GT video card as an option on the d5000t system today. Now, I am definitely extremely temped.

Dont have a ton of experience with the "elite" line of systems, but I know with a lot of HP's my beef with them is A. number of extra things installed with them, B. amount of time it takes to burn their recovery discs (if you want those that is), and C. usually limited BIOS options.

I would likely do a clean install, or ask them at the time of purchase to install only the OS, drivers, and DVD software. I don't want anything else on it.

Any particular reason you don't want to just build a system?

My personal preference is almost always to get a refurb'd Dell (in this case an XPS 420, or a Precision T3400) and upgrade it as desired. When I say upgrade, I mean, for me, the only original parts left are the case/mobo/PSU. 😀

Looks like an ASUS OEM board with few options. It uses G33 chipset, which is disappointing for a $1900 PC. If you don't care for overclocking/tweaking your PC, I don't think it's too bad of a deal. You can certainly do better by buying your own parts and building it yourself.

Asus P45 Board - $200
Nice Case and PSU - $200
9800GTX - $250
1TB Drive - $180
X-Fi - $80
Burner - $30
OS - $150

You save about $200-300 and have a better motherboard and video card. You also know exactly what components is in your system, and not the lowest bidder.

It's a nice machine.

Of course you can build it cheaper, but then you get the hassle of warranty work and folks, some people just can't (or won't) be bothered to build. Even $300 is a small premium for the convenience.

if you don't want to oc then it's ok, but a home-built system in the $1600 range as mentioned by razor would allow you to clock to 3.4 very easily and 3.6 if you didn't mind some fan noise from your system.

also, don't get the 9800gt if you end up getting the prebuilt system. get it with just the integrated graphics and get either an 8800gt or 4850 once they come out.
