I?m working on an HP Pavilion a640n for someone which was severely infested with spyware. I pulled the hard drive and scanned it for viruses. Then I did a destructive system recovery to bring the machine back to original specs with Windows XP Home SP1. After installing SP2, the machine hangs on reboot. It will shut down normally but if I try to do a restart, Windows appears to shut down ok. I go to a black screen, the lights flash on the optical drives and then the HDD activity light comes on and stays on. The machine never gets past that point. I uninstall SP2 and the machine restarts with no problem. I reinstalled SP2 and the problem comes right back. I go into Safe Mode and have no trouble restarting. I go to HP?s website and follow their recommendations for prepping the machine for SP2 and then proceed to install SP2. Same deal. The machine specs are:

With SP2 installed, I?ve gone into msconfig and selected Diagnostic Startup so only the basic stuff gets loaded, but the problem persists. I tried using their tech support and they had me try updating Windows installer prior to installing SP2 but that did nothing. I could tell he was reaching because he told me to run a spyware scan even after I told him this was a fresh install using System Recovery. I?ve disabled startup items and still it still won?t restart. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
