My mother has one of these things and she is wanting to do a little upgrading... I found out that it has a PIII 677 in it. Does anyone know if it is even possible to upgrade this and if so do they have any links that say it is possible.

If possible I would like to take it to a 1ghz

thanks

Put in any 133mhz FSB PIII CPU and she will notice a difference in performance. Other than that, there is not much head room for upgrading.

I guess I should have made myself a little clearer sorry... I ment as far as the CPU... I figured it would support any PIII 133 but I just wanted to make sure..... HP can be a little fruity sometimes about making it hard to change things....

I just upgraded a clients computer, same model as your mothers. I dropped in a PIII 800EB and he said the difference was like night and day.

I did not look at the hard drive specs on it though, and the computer was still running slower than I thought it should for boot time. You may want to do a quick check and see if it is a 5400rpm drive. If it is, take it out (or run it as slave starage) and drop in a 7200rpm drive. That helps out programs a lot. At least 4 seconds for boot time (when I made the switch to 7200rpm drives).

99% positive it was the 133 version (hence EB). In either case the motherboard uses the 810E chipset which does support 133 cpus.
I found out something with a 8290 I owned. HP somehow messes with motherboards to fit their own ends. That 8290 would only upgrade to a PIII 600MHz Katmai, while ASUS had it all the way upto 850MHz coppermine...

With the PIII's being on the expensive side though. I would recommend a Celeron 900MHz or 950MHz upgrade (unless you can find low priced PIII's). They uses the 100 bus and will not require a memory upgrade. That and a faster hard drive will give the most bang for the buck. All for less than $125 :)

Would have PM'ed you on this, but you dont have them enabled. Check out this thread. Can not really go wrong at that price. There are even 45GB+ 7200rpm drives flooding the FS forums right now for under $60 with plenty of warranty left.
