A (girl)friend of mine had someone reinstall Windows on her HP Pavilion 542x some time ago. They forgot to install all the drivers, or couldn't find the audio drivers.

I've tried googling and like 3 different drivers that SHOULD work.

HP's official drivers page:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft...=en&product=83514&lang=en&cc=us&os=228

Cool, audio drivers are conveniently missing. The only CD she has is an HP cd "Recovery Console" that seems to just have Windows XP on it (can use it to install windows). Couldn't find drivers on it...

So 845GL Intel chipset / AC97 Audio onboard chip according to HP's specs on the 542x. I google up drivers for this, try them, no dice. The onboard audio is enabled in the BIOS.

In Device Manager I could see that it had nothing for its audio driver. Looks different now "SigmaTel C Major" with an "!", but I'm not on her PC to take another look. I could reinstall windows but I've got to have the drivers/patches ready first. Uninstalling the drivers now results in windows finding the SigmaTel C Major drivers again (when letting it search) and them not working just the same.

Going into volume controls it says there is no audio device, you can't change the volume.

I'm about ready to find a PCI sound card somewhere and install that.

I thought the HP recovery cd's came with the drivers?

Did the person who re-installed windows for her use the recovery cd, or a regular windows cd?

go to intel website and click on 845gl or any one close to that. That takes you to a page and look for audio drivers should be realtek audio drivers. download save to desktop run and then go into the created folder and click on the setup icon. this will install the drivers and reboot. Should be working fine after that

Checked the site choose the D845GVSR
