Long story short....

Hp p1606dn printer hooked up to a Linksys psus4 print server hooked up to a Linksys wrv210 router.

Hp instructions say to hit the feed button til it blinks then it'll spit out a config page w the ip address shown. 169.254.89.14 Methinks something's wrong. I hate network printing anyway. This ain't helpin.

What's worse is the wrv210 isn't logging ip addresses anywhere i can find and I can't find the psus4 anywhere on the network to see if IT would show the ip address.

Only thing I haven't done yet is reboot the wrv210 which maybe I should have done but I had to leave work before I killed somebody.

Suggestions? TIA

Devices usually get assigned addresses like that by a switch or router when they don't receive a DHCP response.

Ya, that's why I'm kinda thinking I'll reboot EVERYTHING when I get back to work in the morning and see if that doesn't kick out a dhcp ip for the printer.

Another frustrating function of networking. Some day........far into the future.......in a land far, far away......I'm hoping that PLUG N PLAY will be redefined to mean exactly that.

Some day......network printing will be.....easy.

Just kidding. ;)

Maybe a silly question, but do you have the printer connected to the print server with a USB cable, or are you merely using the Linksys print server as a switch?

Just via Ethernet. It actually replaced an old tried and true 5n that just ain't cuttin it anymore. I was even hoping on the outside chance that the sucker might just print as is since they were both HP printers and occupied the same Ethernet cable but no joy.

Make certain that your DHCP server isn't running out of lease slots for IPs. (Too many devices connected, compared to DHCP lease table count.)

Limits are still safe. The router says .5 thru .24 and there are only about 10 possible devices. I don't know why I didn't just reboot router while I was there but oh well. I'll find out in the morning.

Can't you assign a static IP to the printer and leave the DHCP enabled on the router? This way when you reboot, you printer will be alwasy assigned to it? I set my 4650DN to 192.168.2.130 and once the router slotted it, my local ip's just skip it. Not that I would ever have more than 29 devices.

After I did this, the printer always works. When printer was auto DHCP and router was also, it was alwasy conflicting.
