I have this laptop and the screen will not light up. I believe it slowly faded away on the previous owner, though that isn't for sure. It can be used with a monitor, so I know the rest of the system seems to work. I have been scouting out parts on an auction site, and came across a couple of people selling the inverter for the display. One of them goes on to say that the inverter is usually what fails, instead of the back light. I was expecting to replace the whole LCD, assuming that the inverter was inside the LCD.

Is it worth a try to just do the inverter first or go with the LCD right away?

Keep in mind that the inverters burnt out and stay burned out. If the screen has slowly been loosing it's brightness, then it is possible that the bulb inside of the screen has burned out. The inverter is seperate from the LCD. The bulb is inside of the LCD and in my opinion, quite a pain to get to (especially on LG screens).
