HP Officejet v40xi scanning problem.

Hi, I have an HP Officejet v40xi, this is on a HP laptop, hooked up VIA USB. I can scan fine from the software, but when I attempt to scan with the "scan" button directly on the printer I get an error. I went to HP's tech support page, and all they said is I might have a worm, which I don't. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get this to scan directly?
